Why is Sydney Sweeney under fire? Bathwater controversy explained

Today brings fresh news about Sydney Sweeney, shifting focus away from Euphoria Season 3 rumors or her relationship with Glen Powell. Instead, the topic du jour is a surprising one: bathwater soap. The buzz surrounds the actress, but what’s the story behind it and why has she found herself in hot water?

It seems some time has passed since actor Sweeney last appeared on the big screen in movies such as Madame Web, Immaculate, and Anyone But You. Notably, his recent Apple TV+ film, Echo Valley, has gone relatively unnoticed.

Instead, she’s decided to begin selling her previously-used bathwater due to fan requests, mirroring the strategies of influential personalities who have found success with similar ventures.

Indeed, things aren’t as they appear at first glance. This change is due to an ongoing collaboration she has with Dr. Squatch. Since this shift has been announced, it’s already generating controversy. Let me explain the sequence of events leading to the criticism faced by Sweeney:

1. The partnership with Dr. Squatch was formed.
2. A change or decision was made (the exact details are not specified here).
3. This move is now being criticized, which has led to Sweeney facing backlash.

Sydney Sweeney bathwater soap under fire for “shameless grift”

Essentially, the collaboration between Dr. Squatch and Sydney Sweeney has led to the introduction of a special edition men’s soap, named Sydney’s Bathwater Bliss, which will be available for a limited time.

The launch of this product is scheduled for June 6, 2025, and we’re only producing 5,000 units initially. As for the price, that hasn’t been determined yet, but given the high fan interest, it’s unlikely they’ll stick around for too long on store shelves.

In an Instagram post, Sweeney announced, “Meet Sydney’s Bathwater Delight! A truly unique and extremely limited soap, crafted using water from my very own bath.” Previously, she has been featured in ads for a natural soap company, portraying the role of the ‘Soap Genie.’

The concept originated here – as Sweeney explained following her ‘Dirty Little Boys’ advertisement where she was in a bathtub, fans kept inquiring about the water. “Fans would often make jokes about wanting my bath water,” she said, “I thought, ‘This is such a unique opportunity to… fulfill their wishes.’

After releasing their advertisement, Dr. Squatch chose to retain the bathwater, which ultimately became their product. Voila! That’s your product.

However, the move has got mixed reviews, with some fans blasting it as a “shameless grift.”

regretfully, I was under the impression she was beyond such schemes; let’s hope she donates all earnings to charity (rolling my eyes). Another fan commented, “It’s quite desperate to purchase a bar of soap infused with someone else’s used water. Moreover, this product doesn’t contain her bathwater, it’s merely marketing.

“Was she leaping into a swimming pool to mix it or was she using and draining numerous tubs instead? What’s the strength of Sydney Sweeney in one soap bar? How prominently is she listed on the ingredients list? Is the use of Sydney Sweeney in commercial soaps FDA-approved?” (This version maintains the original meaning while using simpler language to make it easier to understand.)

Regardless, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen this marketing move.

Who is Belle Delphine?

Initially causing a sensation on the web in 2019, digital persona and costume player Belle Delphine gained attention by collecting her bathwater for eager admirers and offering jars of it for sale at around $30 each.

Back in the day, there was this product I was quite intrigued by, named “Gamer Girl Bath Water.” It stirred up quite a buzz, just like any other popular topic among gaming enthusiasts like me. Unfortunately, things took a turn when my PayPal account got frozen due to alleged police violations, causing the product to cease production.

In the past few years, I can finally reveal the biggest financial loss I’ve ever experienced. Not only did I fail to make any profit by selling my bathwater, but I actually ended up losing money. Unexpectedly, PayPal closed my account and took the $90,000 that I had earned from this venture,” she posted on X/Twitter in 2024 (before deletion).

In simpler terms, “I couldn’t find a solution because when I contacted them, they declined help and said ‘regrettably, there’s nothing we can do.’ To make a more appealing story, I chose to keep the secret that I supposedly earned a substantial amount by selling my bathwater.

In the end, despite any challenges, I’m glad I went through with it because it was a hilarious period on the internet. I also made sure to send out every bottle of bathwater purchased from me (which I handled personally). So, perhaps I’ll have to part ways with PayPal.

In a 2024 episode of The Louis Theroux Podcast, she explained further, “At the time, I didn’t give it much thought. My goal wasn’t fame or fortune; I simply aimed to earn enough to establish my own home, independent from my mother’s.

It was subsequently verified that she managed to retrieve her funds, stating in a release, “Had I not had any social media presence, they wouldn’t have returned my money. This is incredibly unfortunate because it leaves ordinary users without a social media platform in a predicament like this. I followed all the standard procedures, only to hit roadblocks and eventually give up.

Could she sue?

It’s been speculated that Belle Delphine might consider suing Sydney Sweeney and Dr. Squatch over their sale of used bathwater, but in truth, she doesn’t have a strong enough case to proceed with such legal action.

Selling second-hand bathwater isn’t a novel or patented notion, as Sweeney’s soap product doesn’t closely mirror what Delphine attempted back then.

1. “One fan commented, ‘Duplicating Belle Delphine and supporting patriarchal ideals, we won’t be able to progress,’ with another saying, ‘Belle Delphine paved the way for Sydney Sweeney to stride ahead.’ ”

2. “A fan posted, ‘Imitating Belle Delphine and upholding patriarchy, we can’t move forward,’ as another remarked, ‘Belle Delphine opened the door for Sydney Sweeney to step through.’ ”

3. “One fan wrote, ‘Following in Belle Delphine’s footsteps while promoting patriarchal values means we won’t get very far,’ with a second saying, ‘Belle Delphine blazed a trail that Sydney Sweeney is now running on.’ ”

4. “A comment read, ‘Emulating Belle Delphine and fostering patriarchy won’t lead us anywhere new,’ as another person stated, ‘Belle Delphine laid the groundwork for Sydney Sweeney to advance.’ “

A third person chimed in, “It seemed like we had left this behind us after the Belle Delphine incident, but it appears that’s not the case.
