Why is Amazon Prime shutting down Freevee?

As a gamer who has spent countless hours binge-watching shows on Freevee during my downtime, this news has left me feeling rather deflated. I’ve grown fond of discovering hidden gems like Bosch: Legacy and Judy Justice late at night when Prime Video seemed endless. The thought of losing that part of the service, even if it was just a rebrand, is bittersweet.

It was made simpler to watch a larger selection of films and television series (with advertisements) on Freevee, but unfortunately, Amazon Prime has decided to discontinue it. Here’s what we know so far about this change and its potential impact on you.

If you’ve found yourself browsing through Amazon Prime Video late at night and happened upon an engaging TV series that was previously unknown to you, it’s likely that Freevee had been streaming it.

Launched in 2019 under the moniker IMDb Freedive, subscribers have been able to enjoy its offerings through their usual Prime membership. Its exclusive content includes Bosch: Legacy and updated reality TV shows like Judy Justice (a modern take on Judge Judy for the 2020s).

Amazon will soon be ending its streaming service known as Freevee. The question arises, what’s causing this decision and where will the content be relocated to?

Freevee is closing for one simple reason

As reported by Amazon, Freeve will soon be shutting down to streamline their customer service and make it more straightforward. These adjustments are expected to take place over the next couple of weeks.

Why is Amazon Prime shutting down Freevee?

In order to provide a more streamlined viewing experience for our customers, we’ve chosen to gradually remove the Freevee logo from our content,” an Amazon representative explained in a statement.

In February 2024, there were rumors that Freevee was going to close down, but Amazon firmly denied any such changes at that time. However, it appears that situation has now changed, as by November, it’s clear that something different is happening with Freevee.

In the year 2022, the channel formerly known as IMDb TV (its second rebranding) decided to alter its name to create a clear distinction from other associations.

In January 2024, Amazon’s streaming service, Prime Video, introduced a new pricing structure where viewers need to pay $3 monthly to watch content without advertisements.

It’s possible that one additional explanation for Freevee shutting down is that since the fundamental Prime Video ad-supported subscription operates in a similar way to what Freevee offered prior to its launch, having both services combined might seem unnecessary or redundant.

Aside from its branding, there is now no distinction between the two.

What does this mean for Prime Video users?

As a gamer, here’s some exciting news for us subscribers! Rest assured, your favorite games and content will remain unchanged. The main change you’ll spot is a streamlined experience, with less branding to distract from the fun.

Why is Amazon Prime shutting down Freevee?

Amazon’s representative announced that the content offered to Prime members will remain unchanged. Additionally, a wide selection of free streaming content, featuring some original productions from Amazon MGM Studios, numerous licensed movies and shows, and a diverse range of FAST channels, will continue to be accessible for those who are not Prime members, all available on Prime Video.

Users will not have to pay an additional cost to use it, as it’s already covered by their existing subscription package.

The content previously marked as Freevee will appear to non-Prime users as “Available to Watch Without Charge” on the detailed pages instead.
