The trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie was released yesterday, and it gave fans a first glimpse of two new characters: Bowser Jr. and Princess Rosalina, voiced by Benny Safdie and Brie Larson. While we only saw a little bit of Rosalina’s powers and Bowser Jr.’s wild personality, viewers quickly noticed something seemed different about the mischievous Koopa prince (as Kotaku pointed out).
Bowser Jr. made his debut in Super Mario Sunshine, inheriting his father Bowser’s fiery personality and powerful build, but in a smaller, more mischievous package. While normally cheerful and cartoonish, his eyes recently appeared bloodshot, giving him a surprisingly intense and unsettling gaze that surprised many fans.

Fans have noticed Bowser Jr.’s unusually tired and stressed appearance in the film’s trailer, with his red-rimmed eyes standing out from other characters. It seems he’s a desperate and exhausted Koopa kid on a mission to save his father from Mario and Luigi. This explains his worried look, and a throwaway line from Bowser about needing eight hours of sleep now feels less like a joke and more like a foreshadowing of what happens when he doesn’t get enough rest. The image of his overworked eyes has stuck with viewers.
Okay, so I noticed Junior has red eyes, which is cool! Apparently, some geckos actually have red eyes naturally, so I’m guessing the developers just went with it for a cool, stylistic look. It’s probably not meant to be anything deeper than that.
Hopefully, by the time the movie comes out on April 3rd, the Little Prince will have found some happiness, reconnected with his father, and gotten some rest. As for Bowser Jr., it’s unclear if he’ll get a new look, but one thing is for sure: he’s guaranteed to be a major topic of conversation throughout the Mushroom Kingdom.
