Apple expedited shipping five cargo flights filled with iPhones from India to the U.S., a move made in anticipation of potential tariffs on goods originating from China and India. If you’re wondering why they did this, let me explain:
By sending the phones earlier, Apple might be able to avoid or at least reduce the impact of any additional taxes that could have been imposed on these products had they arrived later, given their origin. This strategic move allows them to maintain a steady supply and avoid potential shortages or price increases due to tariffs.
On April 5, 2025, President Donald Trump announced broad-reaching import taxes affecting nearly every nation worldwide. This means that businesses will soon find themselves shelling out more money for goods they bring into the country.
Increasing the amount companies have to pay could lead to a hike in the prices of consumer goods. For instance, if there’s a 26% tariff on Indian goods and a 104% tariff on Chinese products, it might significantly boost the cost of items such as Apple’s iPhone.
On April 8, 2025, it was reported that Apple had dispatched five planes loaded with iPhones to the U.S., shipping them prior to the implementation of the tariffs.
Apple sent iPhones to US to avoid raising price
As reported by The Times of India, the Indian government disclosed that Apple shipped their devices to the U.S. within a span of merely three days towards the end of March, as part of their preparations for the upcoming tariffs.
By doing this, Apple was able to accumulate devices in the country before the imposition of the import tax, thus avoiding an increase in the prices of their current generation devices for some time.
Since 2017, Apple has been shifting the manufacturing of their iPhone and AirPods devices to India, initially focusing on the production of the iPhone SE. In more recent times, they have also started producing their latest model versions in India.

In simple terms, the ongoing tariffs could potentially lead to an increase in the price of upcoming iPhones such as the models released in 2025, like the iPhone 17.
To determine the extent of the rise, we’ll need to observe further. According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple may be planning to obtain more U.S. iPhones from India due to its significantly reduced tariff compared to China.
It’s uncertain how many iPhones were carried on those aircraft, but in the year 2024, Apple sold more than 200 million units – which is quite a substantial number of smartphones.
Besides Apple, Nintendo too is feeling the effects of Trump’s tariffs. They’ve delayed the pre-orders for the Switch 2 indefinitely so they can evaluate how import taxes from Vietnam will affect their products.
