Why Ballerina’s Director Sees The New John Wick Universe Movie As Something Beyond A Spinoff Or Sequel

In the realm of franchise discourse, there’s a rich vocabulary to describe various parts. Today, we have numerous types beyond just sequels: spin-offs, prequels, crossovers, team-ups, climaxes, continuations, legacy sequels, reboots, and even retcons. These options offer contemporary filmmakers a wealth of creative possibilities when expanding on an established narrative, and this versatility was highly valued by director Len Wiseman in making his latest action film, Ballerina, featuring Ana de Armas.

The upcoming movie titled “Ballerina” broadens the scope of the dynamic John Wick universe, a cinematic world that recently teased several intriguing projects. This film occupies an intriguing place within the series’ continuity. During a press day at 87Eleven Action Design earlier this year, I had a conversation with the director, and he clarified how this movie fits into the action franchise’s timeline and emphasized that it offers something unique compared to typical sequels or spin-offs. According to Wiseman, this is not your standard follow-up or offshoot.

The events occur between Chapter Three and Chapter Four, and they were an engaging exploration of how these elements intertwine with each other. To be honest, I found this process more intriguing than if it had been a standalone story (like a spinoff). This is because it’s essentially a parallel narrative set within the same universe as Chapter Three, while also showing us where John Wick fits into our timeline. This aspect drew me in because it wasn’t a sequel or a spinoff; instead, it was very much part of that world.

Viewers who watched “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” have caught a glimpse into the world of the series’ lore that will be delved deeper in the upcoming movie, “Ballerina”. In this 2019 film, our protagonist John Wick, portrayed by Keanu Reeves, seeks refuge from global assassins. He finds it in a theater where he encounters an old friend called The Director (Anjelica Huston). It’s during this scene set at the location that we discover a program that nurtures young women to be both dancers and deadly weapons – it’s here that Ana de Armas’s character, Eve Macarro, makes her appearance.

In the movie “Ballerina”, the plot initially takes off from this specific sequence and mainly revolves around Eve’s personal quest for revenge. However, as the story progresses, she encounters the legendary character Baba Yaga. Interestingly, this meeting occurs just before he appears in “John Wick: Chapter 4”, which was released in 2023. This unexpected connection is a fun surprise for fans who like to watch their favorite series in specific order marathons.

In the continuation of the John Wick saga, the film Ballerina boasts the return of Keanu Reeves as the lethal assassin John Wick, with Anjelica Huston once again portraying The Director. Additionally, Ian McShane returns as Winston Scott and Lance Reddick delivers his last performance as hotel concierge Charon in the Continental Hotel. Long anticipated, Ballerina is set to hit cinemas on June 6 nationwide.
