As a die-hard movie buff, I must admit that the postponement of “Avengers: Doomsday” might have turned out to be a silver lining for the DC Universe’s “Supergirl” film. This delay could pave the way for Marvel’s main competitor to seize an opportunity. The highly anticipated “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” under the direction of James Gunn, is slated to hit theaters on June 26, 2026. It marks the second big-screen outing for Gunn’s innovative take on the DC brand.
In addition to Supergirl, another superhero movie, Marvel Studios’ Doomsday, had originally been scheduled for release next spring. However, due to a shift in the release date of the new Avengers film from May to December, neither Doomsday nor any other comic book movies will be debuting in spring or early summer 2026, making Milly Alcock’s Supergirl the only superhero movie set for that period.
Although a delay in the release of “Avengers: Doomsday” might disheartens Marvel Cinematic Universe fans, this postponement could potentially pave the way for the DCU’s “Supergirl” movie to thrive in certain aspects if Warner Bros. decides to take advantage of the opportunity.
In the series titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” actress Milly Alcock takes on the role of the main character, Supergirl from Krypton. Throughout the series, Alcock’s portrayal of Kara Zor-El (also known as Supergirl) will embark on a spiritual quest through space, following the storyline by Tom King in his “Supergirl” comic book of the same name.
The upcoming film is directed by Craig Gillespie, who previously brought us “I, Tonya,” and is written by Ana Nogueira, currently working on the “Teen Titans” project for DC Studios. In addition, it features Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills and Jason Momoa portraying the villainous Lobo.
Here Is Why Avengers: Doomsday’s Delay Could Help Supergirl?
Originally, “Avengers: Doomsday” was planned to premiere in cinemas on May 1, 2026. This release date placed it eight weeks ahead of the premier of “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” which was scheduled for June 26, 2026. However, the release date for “Avengers” was later changed from its early May slot to December 16 of the same year.
In a similar vein, it can be said that Supergirl and Doomsday, being popular superhero movies launched nearly simultaneously, might have slightly clashed at the box office as they shared the same cinematic environment, much like two large ships navigating in a narrow sea. Indeed, there’s only so much ‘cinematic space’ to go around.
Instead, the postponement of Doomsday presents a larger opportunity for DC than just avoiding another superhero blockbuster at the box office. In fact, Supergirl could effectively fill the slot initially intended for Doomsday on May 1, instead of a later release in June.
Currently, the path to box office success for Supergirl is expected to be challenging, given that it will be sandwiched between potential billion-dollar earners. Toy Story 5 is set to release on June 19, followed by Minions 3 on July 1.
Considering the colossal stature of these two titanic animations, Supergirl seems to be placed at a strategic disadvantage right off the bat.
If we could shift the release date of the film to May 1st instead of June, it would help avoid competition from both “Toy Story” and “Minions.” This change would also set a strong start for the summer movie season as there’d be fewer films in its path.
On May 1st, the primary significant competitor is expected to be “The Devil Wears Prada 2” from Disney. It’s unlikely that this film will draw many viewers away from “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” Three weeks later, on May 22nd, we have a new Star Wars release titled “The Mandalorian & Grogu“, more details can be found here.
This move could provide Supergirl with a bit of space to perform without intense competition, thus maximizing any potential box office income that Warner Bros. might have overlooked.
Absolutely, Warner Bros. aims to earn maximum profits from their latest DC movie, given that the DC Universe is still relatively new (with only the second film being “Supergirl”). Starting strong financially will be crucial for the universe’s success in the long run.
Indeed, implementing this specific change in the post-production schedule for “Supergirl” could potentially squeeze things a bit, but it might not necessarily be an issue. For instance, consider the upcoming “Superman” film where Milly Alcock’s Supergirl is rumored to first appear on the DCU scene.
James Gunn’s initial DC Studios film, set to hit theaters soon, has finalized its edit over six weeks prior to release. Given that production on Supergirl was completed nearly a year ahead of the proposed May 1, 2023 premiere date, there’s a strong possibility that it might be ready even before May 2026.
Perhaps we should consider shifting the release date of the movie earlier, avoiding intense competition in June or July. This could provide an opportunity to fill the void left by “Avengers: Doomsday” in its previous slot.
