Who’s Joseph Zada? The New Hunger Games Star You Need to Know

In a fresh twist for “The Hunger Games” prequel film titled “Sunrise on the Reaping,” the main cast members have been selected, with some unfamiliar faces stepping into the leading roles. Joseph Zada will portray the character of Haymitch, but let’s see who will play our emerging star!

In the year of the 50th Hunger Games, or the Quarter Quell as it’s known, Suzanne Collins’ novel “Sunrise on the Reaping” delves into how Haymitch Abernathy ultimately emerged victorious in his own Games. You might recall that we were introduced to Haymitch earlier in the books and movies as Katniss’ mentor.

Previously, it was common knowledge that he was a remarkable individual. At the tender age of sixteen, he emerged victorious in the games, an accomplishment that made him one of only two champions ever from District 12; the first being Lucy Gray Baird from The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. Over time, he became associated with an exclusive group that eventually morphed into the rebellion movement.

Even though we have some gaps in our understanding of The Hunger Games, that’s where the novel “Sunrise on the Reaping” comes into play. This book was already set for a movie adaptation before its release, and Joseph Zada has been cast as the main character. However, who is this up-and-coming actor?

Who is Joseph Zada? Where you know new Hunger Games star from

Typically, franchises prefer to feature well-known actors as leads, but the upcoming film “Sunrise on the Reaping” deviates from this trend by casting two relatively inexperienced actors for its primary roles. Joseph Zada is set to portray the character of young Haymitch Abernathy, and his acting resume currently consists mainly of a few minor roles.

At the moment, Zada plays the main character, Charlie Roth, in Stan Australia’s original show “Invisible Boys.” This series was inspired by Holden Sheppard’s bestselling novel and debuted in January, making it a fairly recent development.

Prior to these roles, Zada had appeared in Total Control as Daniel, The Speedway Murders as Dan, and Bilched as Toby. Beyond these parts, Zada is an entirely newcomer to the screen.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m not just focusing on Sunrise on the Reaping; there are other exciting projects in store too. You’ll find me in the TV mini-series East of Eden, and in the eight-part series We Were Liars. The latter is due to hit screens later this year, while both East of Eden and Sunrise on the Reaping are slated for releases in 2026.

To date, Zada has yet to release a public comment about his role as Haymitch in the forthcoming film, however, he’s expressed recognition of his new acting partner, Whitney Peak, in a brief tribute posted on his Instagram Stories.

Sunrise on the Reaping’s unknown casting was intentional

With Zada, Whitney Peak is set to portray Leonore Dove, the character who was Haymitch’s girlfriend at the time of his selection. The filmmakers have suggested that they intended to provide opportunities for lesser-known talents from the outset, as evidenced by casting young actors like Peak.

In a statement, Erin Westerman from the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group praised Jo and Whitney, saying they are continuing the impressive legacy of the Hunger Games franchise by delivering their roles with great emotion, depth, and passion.

As I sifted through countless talented players globally, two really caught my eye – it wasn’t merely their skill that made them shine, but the raw, genuine emotion they breathed into these legendary characters.

Fans have long admired Haymitch, and there’s immense excitement surrounding his backstory within the franchise. His connection with Lenore Dove is a crucial part of Panem’s emotional past. We can hardly wait for fans to delve into the tale that molded one of the most captivating characters in this series.

Nina Jacobson, producer at Color Force, commented, “Deb Zane and Dylan Jury led an extensive (and tiring) quest to discover a talented young actor capable of portraying the character of young Haymitch.

Jo went all out in preparation and won our affection. Later, Whitney left us spellbound by her portrayal as Lenore Dove. When these two were united on screen, it felt like a serendipitous casting choice, one that made us realize we had found the perfect fit.
