In Episode 8 of the series “We Were Liars” on Amazon Prime Video, the identity of the person who set fire to the Clairmont mansion in Beechwood was revealed, and it was not the person viewers anticipated. The eight-episode mystery drama unfolds the story of Cadence Sinclair Eastman (Emily Alyn Lind), as she embarks on a quest to recall the events of Summer 16 before her traumatic brain injury caused temporary amnesia. A pivotal aspect of the puzzle is the devastating incident that transpired during the night of Cadence’s accident.
The story We Were Liars opens with Cadence unconscious on the beach. At first, it appeared as if someone from the Sinclair family had done something to cause her condition due to their complicated history. However, as the narrative unfolds, it becomes apparent that Cadence, along with Gat, Mirren, and Johnny (the other Liars), were all involved in an incident that resulted in her injury – namely, a fire that destroyed the Clairmont mansion.
We Were Liars’ Fire Got Started as the ‘Ultimate Lesson’
In the poignant conclusion of “We Were Liars,” it became clear that the Liars (Cadence, Gat, Mirren, and Johnny) were responsible for setting fire to the Clairmont mansion, a revelation that also exposed Cadence as the mastermind behind the plan. It was revealed that Cadence had grown weary of the endless squabbles among the older Sinclairs, who were constantly vying for Harris Sinclair’s (the patriarch of the Sinclair family) affection, love, and inheritance. This relentless competition had slowly but surely eroded their familial bonds over the years.
As a devoted admirer, I viewed the Clairmont mansion as just the tip of an icyberg, symbolizing all the corruption within the Sinclair clan. In our minds, setting it ablaze was our way of imparting the “ultimate lesson,” a desperate attempt to restore harmony in our family if that grandiose structure were completely erased from existence.
In my review as a movie critic, I must express my concern over a botched plan that unfolded in the film. Our protagonists, Johnny, Cadence, and Mirren, intended to ignite different levels of a mansion, with Gat standing by as an emergency exit strategy on the dock. Regrettably, their scheme unraveled swiftly when the fire they lit grew robust and spread rapidly within the house. This rapid blaze inadvertently trapped Johnny and Mirren within its destructive path, tragically sealing their fates.
In the meantime, Cadence managed to get outdoors, yet opted to go back inside when she heard that her family’s pets were still stuck indoors. As she attempted to rescue them, it was already too late. Upon returning outside, Cadence noticed that Gat had disappeared. It turned out that Gat had come back inside to help her escape the fire, but unfortunately, he also didn’t make it out safely (for more on Cadence and Gat’s relationship twist in We Were Liars).
In a state of alarm, Cadence spotted the burning mansion and understood that the other Liars were yet trapped within. Later, following an explosion in a gas line, she was ejected from the water and discovered unconscious on the shore as a result.
This occurrence further revealed a chilling turn of events in “We Were Liars”: A year following the incident, specters of Gat, Mirren, and Johnny were conversing with Cadence, who was working on recalling her memories.
We Were Liars’ Twist Ending Sets Up Cadence’s Redemption
After uncovering the facts behind the Clairmont mansion fire, Cadence had a profound discussion with her grandfather, Harris Sinclair (who was privy to the truth regarding that fateful night). He warned Cadence to agree to his proposition of making her the Sinclair family’s heiress if she assisted him in removing the family curse. This could be achieved by granting an interview for the upcoming issue of TIME Magazine.
If she disagreed, he threatened to reveal her connection to the fire, portraying her in the media as a “spoiled teenager with a crush who became enraged at her family and was responsible for arson, animal cruelty, and manslaughter without intent.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I initially consented, but at the very last moment, I found myself unable to engage with the reporter to shower Harris with my heartfelt accolades. Instead, I made the decision to bid adieu to Beechwood and seemingly sever ties with the Sinclair family name, choosing instead to forge my own destiny.
Cadence’s decision to avoid the simple path and the reputation and wealth tied to her family lineage significantly contributed to her personal development. By distancing herself from the harmful, racist, and controlling influences of her family, Cadence is fulfilling her commitment to her fellow Liars in a unique manner, regardless of any negative outcomes that may have arisen as a result.
