In June 2025, there’s no formal modding support for Oblivion Remastered from Bethesda, but that doesn’t seem to matter much. After all, modders have always managed without such tools, right? It was more like a hindrance, if you ask me. Since the re-release of Oblivion, jointly handled by Bethesda and Virtuos, a mere two months ago, modders have already produced an array of modifications for Oblivion Remastered without an official toolkit. They’ve managed to extend the lifespan of the Dark Brotherhood, for instance, and found ways to make it compatible with lua scripts.
In simpler terms, the latest marvel for modders is a Fallout 4-like pseudo-settlement building system, creatively named Oblivion Settlement Building – Spawn and Place Objects. Essentially, this tool enables you to effortlessly introduce new items into the game world as if you were a benevolent deity idly placing objects. (via Rock Paper Shotgun)
The examples on the Nexus Mods page show that it’s not only minor modifications. In these demonstrations, it appears that the creator MadAborModding has the ability to generate enormous structures like walls, rocks, and beams throughout Skingrad. It’s quite astonishing, as if modifiers, due to lack of a proper toolkit for Oblivion Remastered, have taken it upon themselves to create their own in-game tools*.
To be honest, the current state is quite directionless. At present, there’s no established structure associated with this mod, which means you can’t populate your custom-made landscapes with characters or control elements such as water flow or commerce.
Instead of waiting for someone else to create those systems now that this mod is available, MadAborModding seems to be hoping that someone will take up the challenge and develop them further. In their own words, they are hoping to inspire someone to expand this into a full-fledged settlement system, as they themselves do not wish to undertake the task. This sentiment of wanting something without having to create it is quite common on Nexus Mods.
Despite its current state, I’m still amazed by what committed modifiers manage to achieve without any official tools. If you’re keen on dabbling with settlement construction yourself, you can get the mod, set up the Unreal Engine 4/5 Scripting System, and then place the mod’s downloaded files into OblivionRemastered\Binaries\Win64\MadSpawnFiles.
