Who Is This Diva in the Wicked Trailer?

As a seasoned theater-goer with a penchant for musicals that delve into the complexities of character and the magic of storytelling, I must say I am absolutely smitten by this latest teaser for Universal’s Wicked movie! The blend of familiar tunes and fresh faces has me buzzing with anticipation.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for major Wicked plot points.

Today, Universal’s marketing team went against the flow by releasing a fresh teaser trailer for “Wicked” that includes genuine singing. This sneak peek caters to both long-time fans of the Broadway musical and new enthusiasts, offering an exciting blend: Ariana Grande portraying Galinda with comical dance moves in “Popular”, Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba delivering a powerful rendition of “The Wizard and I”, Jonathan Bailey bringing charm to “Dancing Through Life” as Fiyero, and surprisingly, a rat playing the drums! Wait a minute, did you just say a rat playing the drums?

At the 11th second, you’ll notice her distinctly: a brief, humorous shot of a small animal that appears to be a sugar glider (though I’m using “rat” as a general term), wearing a colorful ascot and frantically playing a mini drum kit. Later in the trailer, there’s a broader view of the band, composed entirely of CGI animals: an eagle manipulating wind chimes, a monkey strumming strings, a giraffe blowing a harmonica, and it seems like the rat-like drummer might even be hitching a ride on the giraffe that’s playing the harmonica. Is that really the case?

Looking more closely at our small star’s drum set reveals the words “Ozdust” etched on it. This refers to the Ozdust Ballroom, known as the most stylish hangout in town, where characters like Elphaba, Galinda, Fiyero, Boq, Nessarose, and likely Bowen Yang’s character would leave their schoolwork behind for a night of dancing. If you haven’t seen or aren’t familiar with the musical Wicked, or if you avoid track five due to its content, you might not understand the significance of this animal band. In Wicked, the animals are intelligent but marginalized citizens of Oz and play a significant role in the story. Given this, the Ozdust Ballroom could be similar to this film’s Kit Kat Klub, potentially hinting at danger for this adorable creature. By the end of the movie, expect the country-bear jamboree to be replaced by a human group performing an Ozian version of “Tomorrow Belongs to Me.

Today, however, it’s Drum Rat’s day! She radiates true stardom. We honor and elevate our unique native marsupial into an Australian pop icon. Could a theme song by Ozdust Ballroom Sugar Glider for the credits, titled “Wicked“, pave its way to an Oscar? Anything is possible!
