As a die-hard fan of country music and a devoted viewer of Yellowstone, I’ve been thrilled to see Lainey Wilson’s career skyrocket as she graces our screens week after week. Her raw talent and captivating performances as Abby have left me in awe, and I can’t help but feel like I’m right there in that Texas honky-tonk with her every time she sings.
Besides currently being a highly acclaimed country singer, Lainey Wilson also stars as a guest character in Taylor Sheridan’s grand Western series, Yellowstone.
The Yellowstone series boasts an abundance of well-known country musicians among its cast members. Ranging from Tim McGraw to Ryan Bingham, there’s no dearth of genuine celebrities within the Dutton storyline, and Lainey Wilson is one of the most recent (and notable) entrants.
In Season 5, not only did some of her well-known tunes play out on the Yellowstone soundtrack, but Wilson herself made an appearance, performing several of her top tracks live. (And she even developed a soft spot for one of the ranch hands who’s easy on the eyes!)
Here’s a breakdown of Lainey Wilson’s stint on Yellowstone, with information about her appearance schedule and the tunes she performs.
Who does Lainey Wilson play?
Lainey Wilson portrays Abby in Yellowstone, a musician enlisted to entertain at a gathering at the Dutton Ranch. Over time, she develops feelings for Ryan.
She makes her debut in Season 5, Episode 1, at a gathering hosted on the Dutton Ranch following John’s inauguration as the Governor of Montana.
In a casual encounter, Abby encounters Beth first. Beth playfully critiques Abby’s extravagant attire and engages her in conversation about the ranch workers. Abby, known for her boldness, responds to Beth by saying, “I find cowboys intellectually stimulating, but I prefer not to date one.
When questioned about her reluctance to date a cowboy, Abby explains, “Because their lifestyle will always hold a greater appeal for them.” However, Abby’s hesitation doesn’t persist for long when she encounters ranch hand Ryan, who develops an affinity for the talented vocalist.
Later on, Ryan loops a lasso around her and persuades her to dance with him. Yet, despite his persistent attempts, Abby firmly denies any potential future for them. Nevertheless, they continue their conversations and encounters in subsequent episodes until Ryan is relocated to Texas with Rip and the rest of the group to safeguard the cattle.
Wilson landed a part in the series following numerous appearances on the soundtrack during previous seasons.
In July 2024, she shared with Today that her relationship with creator Taylor Sheridan grew stronger. She disclosed, “Taylor Sheridan approached me saying, ‘I have an idea for a character tailored just for you. You’ll get to perform your music and essentially play yourself, but under the stage name Abby.’ I responded, ‘To be honest, I’ve never acted before.’
“He remarked, ‘Many of the musicians I collaborate with, unknowingly, perform like actors and actresses since there are moments when you need to take the spotlight on stage.’
Perhaps last night someone special was taken away from you, or perhaps you’re dealing with a breakup – the possibilities are endless. Yet, when you step onto that stage, it’s no longer about your personal emotions.
What episodes is Lainey Wilson in?

- Season 5 Episode 1: ‘One Hundred Years Is Nothing’
- Season 5 Episode 3: ‘Tall Drink of Water’

Lainey Wilson’s songs in Yellowstone
In the popular series Yellowstone, a total of seven songs by Lainey Wilson are featured. Some of these tunes can be found on the show’s official soundtrack, while others were performed by her character, Abby, on-screen.
Here’s every song Lainey Wilson performs in Yellowstone:
‘Workin’ Overtime’
In the background music of Season 2’s first episode, it is audible that Rip, in response to a fight among the ranch hands, unleashes an enraged bull in the local tavern.
‘Straight Up Sideways’
In the heat of Season 3, Episode 6, I found myself belted out during the nail-biting rodeo barrel race between Mia and Laramie. The track played my tune, making me feel like a part of their thrilling competition.
‘Small Town Girl’
In the tenth episode of Season 3, titled ‘Small Town Girl’, the song is played as Mia motivates Jimmy to venture out independently following his infatuation with the rodeo scene.
‘Smell Like Smoke’
In Season 5 Episode 3, this song was the initial performance by Abby (played by Wilson), taking place at a local bar where Ryan happened to be. This marked the first time this track appeared, and it eventually found its place in her “Bell Bottom Country” album as one of its released singles.
‘New Friends’
In the fourth episode of Season 5, Wilson’s tune is featured on the soundtrack as Jamie Dutton and Sarah Atwood share playful drinks at the Deerfield Club.
‘Watermelon Moonshine’
In the captivating world of “Nashville,” I found myself immersed during Season 5, Episode 6, where the enchanting melody of ‘Watermelon Moonshine,’ one of Wilson’s most popular hits, echoed once more. This time it was Abby and her band that graced the ranch stage, providing the perfect soundtrack for another memorable cattle drive.
‘Hold My Halo’
In the latest episode, Wilson sang her second number, following a dance with her newest partner Ryan, during which it was their turn to perform.
Will she be in Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2?
Wowza! Back in August 2024, I stumbled upon an open invitation, hinting that the amazing Lainey Wilson was filming additional scenes for Yellowstone’s Season 5 Part 2. Can’t wait to see her shine on screen again!
As a dedicated fan, I received a call that had me all excited – they were looking for fans like me to be part of a live concert scene starring my favorite artist, Wilson, right here in Fort Worth, Texas!
It’s logical since Part 1 concluded with Ryan and several others leaving for Texas to safeguard their livestock during the winter months. If Abby happens to be touring and finds herself in Texas, there’s a chance that Ryan might spot her performing again.
Wilson additionally gave subtle indications about her coming back as Abby, stating to Entertainment Tonight on the Twisters red carpet, “I can confirm some positive news for you.
As a devoted follower, I can honestly admit that I’m unsure of the exact resumption date. However, what I can assure you is that we are meticulously planning to ensure we have ample time to tackle the task at hand effectively because we’ve got quite a bit on our plate currently. Nonetheless, rest assured, it’s a top priority for us.
Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 arrives on November 10.
