If you’ve binged on Invincible Season 3 and can’t bear the thought of waiting for more, here’s a simple solution to keep the story going: delve into the comic books, and you’ll quickly find your starting point.
Delving into the world of comics can be an intimidating experience at times, as some stories, like the upcoming MCU project Daredevil: Born Again, may not stem from a single storyline but rather pull elements from various comic book issues over Marvel’s extensive history.
Fortunately, Invincible is much simpler to understand and closely follows the original source material from Robert Kirkman’s comics. He refers to the series as a “revised version” of the story, but for now, it’s essentially been similar (with Damien Darkblood being a notable exception).
After finishing Episode 8 from Season 3, identifying where to delve into the comics becomes straightforward.
This is where Invincible Season 3 ends in the comics
In Issue #65 of the comics, Invincible’s third season comes to a close, covering Mark’s recuperation following his battle with Conquest, Eve revealing her abilities, Rex Splode’s funeral, the repair of Angstrom Levy’s arm by the Technicians, and a sneak peek at Rus Livingston and the Sequids.
Significantly, it’s also disclosed in a startling manner: Conquest remains alive, and Cecil has imprisoned him within a massive 400-ton block of strong tempered steel. He intends to keep him there until he regains consciousness and reveals “all the secrets about the Viltrum empire and the danger it poses to this planet.
In the closing moments, Mark pays a visit to Oliver in the hospital and expresses regret for failing to shield him. “If someone threatens my family or someone dear to me… if there’s another menace lurking, endangering lives and relentlessly attacking until they eventually triumph, I won’t think twice before taking their life.
Where to start in the Invincible comics before Season 4
To catch up on the Invincible comics before Season 4 starts, a good place to begin might be with Comic Issue #66. I won’t give away any spoilers about what transpires, but I can tell you that it centers around Omni-Man and Allen the Alien.
If you’ve got a US library card, you can access Invincible comics for free. You can read them online too, through Amazon Kindle and various other digital platforms. For those who prefer hard copies, Issue #66 can be found in stores.
- Invincible: Compendium Two (includes Issues #48-96 and Invincible Returns #1)
- Invincible – Growing Pains (Vol. 13 of the trade paperbacks, includes Issues #66-70 and Invincible Returns #1)
- Vol. 6 of the Invincible Ultimate Collection hardcovers (includes Issues #60-70 plus Invincible Returns #1)
- Vol. 3 of The Complete Invincible Library (includes Issues #46-70)
For the best guidance, I’d recommend taking a look at the entire Issue #66 instead of diving right in. Though it might appear daunting, understanding the whole context is definitely worth your time, as you’ll uncover some minor discrepancies that would otherwise escape notice.
During our conversation with Robert Kirkman, he hinted that readers shouldn’t assume they’ve grasped everything yet. He suggested there could be some unforeseen twists at the end, and certainly some unexpected turns for comic book enthusiasts, along with a few changes here and there throughout the storyline.
Simon Racioppa, one of the series’ co-showrunners, mentioned that they strive to maintain fidelity to the books, but also add small twists, unexpected elements, and amplify certain moments. Their aim is to keep their audience on their toes with a few delightful surprises in each episode.
To get the scoop on upcoming comic spoilers, you can uncover the outcome for Powerplex, reveal Angstrom Levy’s ending, and see whether Oliver survives or not.
Additionally, you can monitor the show’s soundtrack and learn why Mark’s blue suit holds significance. During our conversation with Robert Kirkman, he delved into the reasons behind Spawn’s absence in the Invincible War and potential lack of a Rex Splode special in the near future.
