The true adventure in Oblivion Remastered unfolds once you exit the dirty sewers of the Imperial City and find yourself in the realm of Cyrodiil. From the outset of the game, there are no boundaries on where you can travel, whom you can encounter, or what actions you can take. You have the freedom to either pursue the main storyline, which involves delivering an amulet that the emperor entrusted to you before his death, or disregard the plot and delve into the wonders of this fresh world instead.
If you’ve played Oblivion before, you probably already know where to start. But if you’re new to the game with the remaster, you might benefit from some direction. The map is vast and includes several locations that offer free fast travel, even from great distances, right from the beginning.
To start off with Oblivion Remastered, here are some suggestions for your initial steps after exiting the sewers: we’ll provide a few key locations to explore. For a comprehensive guide on this refreshed adventure, check out our complete Oblivion Remastered walkthrough.

Follow the Black Road
Multiple paths diverge from the Imperial City in Cyrodiil, one of them being the Black Road that heads northwest towards Chorrol, a significant city. Traveling on the Black Road offers various experiences, including caves to delve into, quaint towns to visit, and quests to embark upon. The journey begins at Weye, a town where you can initiate the Go Fish side quest in Oblivion Remastered, which eventually rewards you with a valuable ring.
Heading along the Black Road will lead you to Weynon Priory eventually, a location where your initial major quest begins. Here, you’ll have the chance to converse with Jauffre, who can provide insights as to why the emperor bestowed the amulet upon you.
You needn’t feel obligated to halt at Weynon Priory; it’s perfectly fine if you choose to bypass it and proceed directly towards Chorrol instead. This vibrant city offers a rich tapestry of intriguing personalities, captivating side quests, and even opportunities to join both the Fighters Guild and the Mages Guild.
Unlike Skyrim, there isn’t a rigorous induction procedure for joining either of these guilds, making it possible for you to enter and become a member immediately in the northern part of Chorrol. This swift access grants you the opportunity to embark on fresh quests, encounter new characters, and acquire new weapons, spells, and equipment. While Chorrol is not the only city where these guilds can be joined, it’s one of the most advantageous starting points.
At the end of the Dark Path lies a place known as Battlehorn Keep. Despite its unassuming exterior, as you draw near, you’ll find a skirmish taking place at its entrance. If you can overcome all the adversaries attempting to breach the gates, you’ll be granted the title deed for Battlehorn Keep. This gives you sole possession of the keep and everything within it.
At minimum, Battlehorn Castle grants you complimentary repairs for your equipment at the blacksmith, numerous beds for rest and character advancement, and an opportunity to customize your own castle. You can converse with a merchant in Imperial City to purchase blueprints for castle enhancements, allowing you to personalize it extensively.
Head inside the North Sewers
Even though you originated from beneath the city streets, it doesn’t prevent you from returning there just as easily. The primary entrance to the sewers in Oblivion Remastered leads westward, taking you to the North Exit of the underground system. During your journey, you may stumble upon a Nirnroot Plant near the adjacent lake, initiating the quest known as “Seeking Your Roots.
To gain access to the North Sewers, you’ll have to tackle a challenging lock first, which may require several attempts. Once you’re in, navigate through narrow passages and chambers until you find a ladder leading up to “The Main Ingredient” cellar. There, you’ll encounter another lock that grants access to the cellar, followed by another one that allows entry into The Main Ingredient shop itself from the cellar level.
Once you manage to gain entry, you’ll find yourself face-to-face with the store owner, Oegir Goerick. It is here that you embark on the Unfriendly Competition quest. This intricate journey eventually leads you to acquiring two top-tier early-game melee weapons in Oblivion Remastered. You’ll also gather additional gear and gain a better sense of the Imperial City’s layout.
Venturing forth from the Northern Sewers offers me an effortless route straight into the Imperial City’s core, granting me ample opportunity for deeper exploration. Once there, I can roam freely, uncovering hidden gems at my leisure, then return to the sewers and retrace my steps back to the starting point.
A fantastic method to utilize your time within the Imperial City involves conversing with Non-Player Characters (NPCs) and inquiring about the city’s rumors. This will keep you informed of significant side quests and the individuals you should approach next.
Join one or all of the Guilds
In Oblivion Remastered, we’ve discussed the Fighters and Mages Guilds, but there are more options for guilds to join in Cyrodiil. Besides these two, you can also become a member of the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood. The unique aspect here is that joining these last two doesn’t involve visiting a specific location; instead, it necessitates performing a particular action.
In Oblivion Remastered, here are three ways to connect with the Thieves Guild:
1. Break the law by committing a crime and accept the consequences, which could include going to jail.
2. Show kindness to a beggar by giving them some coin, then ask about the guild.
3. Independently locate the guild through information provided by The Grey Fox.
Whichever method you choose, the Thieves Guild provides exciting quests and valuable rewards in Oblivion Remastered.
An alternative option is to consider becoming part of the secretive organization known as the Dark Brotherhood. However, this opportunity arises only after you have committed a heinous act by taking an innocent life and then spending a night in bed. During this period of rest, a character named Lucien Lachance may approach you with a proposal to join their ranks.
Beyond the various guilds featured in Oblivion Remastered, you also have the option to join the Imperial Arena. Nestled within Imperial City, you can engage with Owyn to participate in Arena combat. In this setting, you’ll face off against opponents and rise through the ranks by continuing to win, which will grant you fresh rewards along the way.
Go east towards Vilverin
The recommendation we have is to head east from the sewer exit. On the other side of the lake lies the Ayleid Ruin called Vilverin. Exploring within Vilverin will yield several intriguing items, including Welkynd Stones. These stones can restore your magicka instantly and are also useful for channeling shock spells – a handy asset if you decide to join the Mages Guild in Chorrol.
Within Vilverin lies a collection of chests filled with gold, encounters with robbers for combat and plunder, and various locations ripe for discovery. Once you complete Aeylid Ruin, you can leave and continue eastward along the Blue Road towards Cheydinhal city. This place houses branches of both Mages and Fighters Guilds, plus numerous other adventures waiting to be undertaken.
Inside Vilverin, there are lots of gold-filled chests, bad guys to fight and loot, and many areas to explore. After finishing Aeylid Ruin, you can exit and keep moving east along the Blue Road towards Cheydinhal city. Here, you’ll find guild branches for mages and fighters, as well as additional quests to start.
An alternative route is heading a bit northward from Vilverin, following the Silver Road towards the city of Bruma. Although Bruma might not be particularly thrilling, it still offers a worthwhile experience for visitors to discover and explore.
