Where to catch a Grand Escunite in Monster Hunter Wilds

In Monster Hunter Wilds, the final fishing challenge your sensei, Kanya, gives you is called the Razzle Dazzle. Unlike the small and big fish you’ve caught before, this time you’re not fishing for a fish – it’s the Grand Escunite, a squidlike creature that lives in the Scarlet Forest. Catching one of these elusive creatures will complete Kanya’s questline.

In my gaming adventure, I stumbled upon the Grand Escunite nestled within the underwater lair of the eighth region in the Scarlet Forest. If this place seems vaguely familiar, it’s likely because you may recall venturing into this zone to nab Kanya’s Goldenfish during her second quest—unless, of course, you chanced upon one somewhere else entirely. For those who haven’t been here before, the journey begins at the base camp and leads you deep into the forest, where you must brave the waterfall and venture into the hidden cave that lies beyond it.

There are two possible locations for finding the Grand Escunite: One is to the left of the pop-up camp, atop a small rocky outcropping near the water. The other is deeper in the cave. Reach the lower platform, then walk into the water until you’re given an option to dive. Swim across and you’ll encounter another pool directly ahead.

Now, because the Grand Escunite isn’t a typical fish, having tentacles instead of fins, it stands out quite easily. Keep an eye out for the one with the large shell as it gently moves through the water. Again, press the left bumper and choose the rod from the Essential Items menu. Then, opt for the Tentacle Jig lure that Kanya provided you. Don’t forget: do not use the capture net to catch this creature. It won’t contribute to your quest and you’ll have to locate another one instead.

In my experience, the Grand Escunite wouldn’t react no matter what actions I took, but after reloading the area, it attacked immediately. So, persistence is key. Now, just return the fish to Kanya and she’ll confess that she’s never actually caught one before. It seems the student has surpassed the master.
