Netflix’s new series: “Titan: The OceanGate Catastrophe” delves into the chilling tale of the 2023 submarine accident, in which five explorers lost their lives during an expedition to explore the Titanic wreck site.
After the Titan went out of communication on June 18, 2023, it ignited a wave of theories and speculations worldwide. In the subsequent search efforts, it was discovered that the immense water pressure had caused the ship to collapse.
In the heart of the calamity stood OceanGate CEO, Stockton Rush, a man often criticized for putting ambition above safety, and one of the five passengers who tragically lost their lives on that fateful day.
In the recently released documentary, there’s extensive exploration of his contentious history; however, a person seldom discussed is Wendy Weil Rush, his spouse and collaborator in various projects over the years.
Where is Wendy Weil Rush now?
Ever since that fateful day of the Titan submersible accident, I’ve found myself drawn more towards the quiet corners of my apartment than the bustling world outside. While rumors swirl about my whereabouts, I’m still firmly planted in Seattle, Washington – a city that Stockton and I once called home before he left us too soon.
Back in 1986, I was fortunate enough to tie the knot with Stockton Rush, a chance encounter happening while we were both students at Princeton University. Prior to a certain event, I had proudly held the positions of Director of Communications and Expedition Team Member at OceanGate, as publicly listed on my now-erased LinkedIn profile.
In Washington State records, it is noted that Stockton serves as the treasurer, while Wendy holds the positions of both director and president for the charitable arm of the company, known as the OceanGate Foundation.
Despite OceanGate temporarily halting all explorations and commercial activities following the Titan’s implosion mere weeks ago, I’m left wondering if they still hold any ongoing business ventures related to it.
According to the documentary, the company officially halted all activities in July 2023, announcing this decision on their website by ending all of their projects.
In the year 2023, Wendy’s net worth was stated as approximately $2.25 million, whereas Stockton’s wealth was projected to be between $12 million and $15 million. Yet, there are concerns about how ongoing legal disputes and the shutdown of the company might have affected the Rush family’s assets.
As a dedicated gamer in 2024, I found myself stepping into the role of administrator for the estate of my late friend and mentor, Paul-Henri Nargeolet – a renowned French Titanic expert who tragically perished on the fateful ship. In accordance with his wishes, I took legal action against several parties, seeking justice for both him and the legacy he left behind.
Among those being accused are OceanGate Inc., the estate of Stockton Rush, along with related manufacturers and subcontractors who worked on constructing the Titan. The charges against them involve claims of an unseaworthy vessel, wrongful death, negligence, liability for damages, and pre-death physical distress and suffering.
As stated in the lawsuit, Wendy has been appointed as the executor of her deceased spouse’s assets. This implies that she might be the legally accountable individual when it comes to managing any potential lawsuits directed towards his estate.
By June 2025, there’s no news that this ongoing lawsuit has been resolved, implying it could continue, and its potential financial outcomes might affect Wendy, contingent upon the management of the Rush estate’s affairs.
Wendy Weil Rush descendent of Titanic passengers
One frequently discussed topic about Wendy is that she descends directly from the Titanic through her great-great grandparents, Isidor and Ida Straus. These two individuals were well-known first-class passengers who tragically perished when the Titanic sank in 1912.
Isidor was jointly responsible for the ownership of Macy’s department store, and he and his wife earned renown as emblems of loyalty when they bravely decided to stay together instead of being parted during the ship evacuation, ultimately choosing death over separation.
In the iconic movie “Titanic,” directed by James Cameron in 1997, they make a brief appearance during one of the film’s most poignant moments. This scene shows them snuggled together in bed with rising water surrounding their cabin as they cling to each other emotionally.
Stockton shares a distinguished bloodline, as demonstrated by the recent Netflix documentary. It uncovers that his family history includes two signatories of the Declaration of Independence – namely, Benjamin Rush and Richard Stockton.
As a gamer, I’ve been following the Titan disaster closely and my thoughts on the matter have certainly stirred up some conversation. One Reddit user commented, “She’ll keep her mouth shut for as long as she can, that’s what her lawyers advised. With so many countries involved, it might take decades before this case even reaches court.
Others speculated that she might lack the funds to carry on with her defense if the case proceeds, but one countered, “Her family is wealthy, just like Rush’s. They are likely well-connected. I wouldn’t be shocked if she has a friend in the legal profession who could assist her at a reduced rate.”
Others thought she might struggle to afford legal representation if the case goes on, but someone else pointed out, “Her family is affluent, similar to Rush’s. They probably have connections. It wouldn’t be surprising if she knows someone in the legal field who could help her at a lower cost.
One individual remarked, “She’s actually a relative of Isidor and Ida Strauss. Her family is incredibly wealthy,” and another commented, “In fact, her family owns the Macy department stores. She’s quite well-off.
Where are their children now?
Wendy and Stockton Rush share a family with two sons, Richard “Ben” and Quincy Rush. However, since the unfortunate event, they have chosen to stay out of the limelight.
As a devoted admirer looking back, I can’t help but trace the footsteps of a remarkable individual like Richard. Just like his father before him, he delved deep into the mechanical engineering realm, where his passion truly bloomed. For his thesis, he crafted an ingenious robotic arm designed for submersible vehicles – a testament to his ingenuity and dedication. Fast forward to 2023, as reported by The Daily Mail, this prodigy is soaring new heights, now working as a skilled pilot in the skies of Washington.
Quincy Rush, their daughter, has stepped into the legal profession, having served as a Law Clerk at the U.S. District Court in California’s Central District. According to reports, she resides in Los Angeles and tied the knot with Daniel Lee in 2019.
