The creators of Marvel Studios’ recent Disney+ series, Ironheart, have made it clear where the show fits within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) chronology. In this series, Dominique Thorne portrays Riri Williams, a brilliant mind unlike Tony Stark, who is expelled from MIT and must find an alternative means to finance her inventions and noble aspirations after being ousted.
In a conversation with Russ Milheim from TopMob, producers Sev Ohanian and Zoie Nagelhout of Ironheart revealed the timeline of the series in relation to other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects. This is an update as actress Dominique Thorne herself has been somewhat secretive about this matter lately.
Ohanian revealed to TopMob that the show takes place “about six months after [‘Wakanda Forever’].”
The series will delve into various aspects during its broadcast, and Ohanian mentioned that viewers will have an opportunity to witness a side of Chicago that hasn’t been showcased in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) before. Additionally, he pointed out that a significant part of Riri’s storyline involves her striving to acquire the necessary means to launch her career as Ironheart.
Nagelhout mentioned that “Ironheart” would offer fans an opportunity to witness Riri Williams thriving, rather than struggling like a fish out of water, as she did in her initial Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance.
On Tuesday, June 24, 2025, the first three episodes of “Ironheart” will debut on Disney+. The remaining episodes will be released in another set of three on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.
When Does Ironheart Take Place in the MCU Timeline?
The Show Isn’t as Current as Fans Might Think
- TopMob: “Where does this show take place on the Marvel timeline? How far after [‘Wakanda Forever’] and where is it relative to something that just happened, like, ‘Daredevil’ or ‘Thunderbolts?'”
As a fan, I’d anticipate that we might be seeing the release of “Wakanda: Forever” within the next six to twelve months, give or take.
In a nutshell, Sev Ohanian initially found the timeline of ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ confusing as it didn’t seem to align with the eight-year gap he expected. However, when developing the show, they had always intended for it to take place roughly six months to a year after the events in Wakanda. Although some Marvel productions are set at various points in the 2020s, he would refer to this timeframe as being approximately six months following ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’.
Exploring Riri Williams in New Ways
Ironheart Will Explore a New Corner of the MCU
- TopMob: “When it comes to exploring Riri Williams as a character, what were some of the key differences you really wanted to dive into in this show that audiences never saw in ‘Wakanda Forever,’ where she debuted?”
Sev Ohanian: In ‘Wakanda Forever’, she plays a significant role, yet we only catch a glimpse of her character. The series promises to delve deeper into her personality and give us a chance to witness her shine. What makes the show even more intriguing is that it takes us to Chicago, a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe we haven’t explored much before. Additionally, a large portion of her story revolves around gathering resources for her quest, which sets her on this adventure in the first place.
Zoie Nagelhout: Essentially, she seemed terribly out of place in Wakanda, so let’s use this opportunity to watch her thrive in her natural environment instead.
