‘Wheel of Time’ Open-World RPG Game in the Works—Fans Are Buzzing!

A game adaptation of Robert Jordan’s “The Wheel of Time” book series (which consists of 14 books) is being developed by the games division of iwot Studios.

Developed entirely in-house by iwot games, headed by industry veteran Craig Alexander (previously with Warner Bros. Games), the “Wheel of Time” video game is categorized as an AAA open-world role-playing title. The team anticipates a three-year development phase for this project, aiming to release it on both PC and gaming consoles.

For the record, the studio’s fresh games branch aims to capitalize on the international acclaim of Amazon Prime Video’s “The Wheel of Time” television series remake, currently airing its third season, by incorporating it into their upcoming venture.

Located in the thriving video game development city of Montreal, the studio will lead the way in creating an interactive entertainment segment as part of the company’s broader strategy to adapt ‘The Wheel of Time’ for multiple platforms, including movies, TV shows, and video games.

Back in 2004, iwot Studios (previously known as Red Eagle Entertainment) obtained the rights to Jordan’s “Wheel of Time” book series for various platforms like movies, TV shows, video games, and comics. Now, iwot Studios is working on several projects set within this universe. For instance, they’re developing an ongoing TV series adaptation on Amazon, a feature film titled “Age of Legends” directed by Kari Skogland, and a 3D animated project in collaboration with Quebec-based Squeeze Animation Studios.

Rick Selvage, CEO of iwot Studios, shares with EbMaster that there will be considerable consistency in the way they handle their cross-platform storytelling, or transmedia strategy, for “The Wheel of Time” video game, television series, and future movies.

Selvage described the game as an open-world exploration, encompassing every aspect of ‘The Wheel of Time’ series, including all the books’ content and background details. As we develop this world, it won’t be confined to a specific location or era; instead, it will span the entire ‘Wheel of Time’ universe. While films are an opportunity, given our work on ‘Age of Legends,’ we’ll have resources and marketing advantages from that, as well as chances for fan engagement and numerous other benefits, the game will encompass the whole world.

The “Wheel of Time” book series, penned by Robert Jordan and later completed by Brandon Sanderson, boasts over 2,750 distinct characters and is rich with historical and mythological references that still offer plenty of room for further investigation, according to iwot Studios.

Alexander mentioned that transforming such a renowned mythology into an open-world role-playing game is a unique and daring endeavor,” he said. “It requires imagination, vastness, and a thriving creative space – all aspects Montreal offers abundantly. I’m excited to spearhead this project and assemble a top-tier team that can do justice to this cherished realm.

Alexander has been in charge of product development at Warner Bros. Games before, where he oversaw the creation of popular games such as “The Lord of the Rings Online,” “Dungeons & Dragons Online,” a mobile game based on “Game of Thrones,” and several DC superhero titles. Prior to this, he held high-ranking positions at Activision, Electronic Arts, and Sierra On-Line.

Alexander is presently assembling the management team for the recently established iwot Game Studio in the areas of design, technology, and art. Interested applicants may submit their applications to opportunities@iwotgames.com.
