‘Wheel of Fortune’ With New Host Ryan Seacrest Was the Most-Watched Entertainment Show Across Broadcast, Cable and Syndication in September

As a film enthusiast with a penchant for game shows that span decades, I must say I am thoroughly impressed by the resilience and adaptability of “Wheel of Fortune.” Having grown up watching Pat Sajak and Vanna White spin their magic, it’s heartening to see the show continue its reign as a television staple with the fresh energy brought in by Ryan Seacrest.

Viewers continue to enjoy “Wheel of Fortune” with its new host, Ryan Seacrest, as they did during Season 42. In this season, Seacrest replaced longtime host Pat Sajak, while Vanna White remained as co-host. The show made a significant impact in its premiere month by being the most-watched entertainment program on both broadcast and cable TV, as well as syndication, during September.

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I’m always keeping tabs on viewership numbers, and let me tell you, the premiere month of “Wheel of Fortune” in 2024 really stood out. According to Nielsen data, an impressive 7.99 million viewers tuned in during those weeks from September 9 to October 6. When we exclude sports and news from the equation, it’s clear that more people chose to watch “Wheel” than any other linear TV entertainment program. Even when we factor in news, only “60 Minutes” managed to draw a slightly larger audience with 8.98 million viewers. It just goes to show you the enduring appeal of this classic game show!

The debut of Seacrest significantly boosted “Wheel’s” viewership, marking its highest initial month audience in three years, with a 12% increase compared to the previous year. As reported by Sony Pictures TV, the show attracted a total of 40 million viewers during its first month. Additionally, “Wheel of Fortune” has seen a 3% rise in the demographic of adults aged 25-54 when compared to last year’s figures.

Wheel of Fortune,” a popular game show, is manufactured by Sony Pictures Television. In the U.S., it’s broadcast by CBS Media Ventures, while internationally, it’s distributed by Paramount Global Distribution Group. Interestingly, these two entities collaborate on another hit series, “Jeopardy!”, which ranked as the third most-watched entertainment program during the initial month of the season, boasting an average viewership of 7.35 million. Notably, a special preview episode of CBS’s “Matlock” came in second place with 7.74 million viewers.

Based on initial reports from local sources, the Season 42 premiere earned a household rating of 4.62 in overnight markets, which is significantly higher than the 2.94 rating for the Season 41 premiere in 2023. The show “Wheel of Fortune” made its comeback on September 9, 2024, introducing several changes such as a new set adorned with numerous lights and most notably, a brand-new host. This change was signaled at the beginning of the show when announcer Jim Thornton announced, “And now for the first time together, here are our hosts, Ryan Seacrest and Vanna White!

Regarding Sajak, you’ll still catch him gracing your screens during the mid-season run of “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune” on ABC’s prime-time slot. This will mark his final appearance on the program.
