For the very first time, “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune” will be available for live streaming during their current seasons, starting this September on platforms like Hulu, Peacock, and Disney+’s Hulu. On Tuesday, Sony Pictures Television disclosed these multi-year, shared, exclusive, national deals for next-day streaming licensing.
In the terms of the agreement, Sony announced that for the first time, in-season episodes of “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel” (likely referring to “The Wheel of Fortune”) would become accessible on national streaming platforms; previously recorded episodes of these shows will also be made available.
Keith Le Goy, Chairman of Sony Pictures Television, expressed excitement about making popular American game shows accessible to an even larger number of viewers on Hulu, Disney+, and Peacock. ‘Jeopardy!’ and ‘Wheel of Fortune,’ two of television history’s most successful game shows, will now offer their fans the best streaming experiences this fall.
As per Sony’s announcement, streaming will commence when “Jeopardy” enters its 42nd season and “Wheel of Fortune” reaches its 43rd season on syndication.
The latest update is that Sony and CBS are still at odds regarding their lengthy collaboration on two popular syndicated game shows. For many years, Sony has been responsible for producing the shows, having taken over from the original producer Merv Griffin’s production company. On the other hand, CBS has served as the syndication distributor, succeeding the original distributor King World.
Previously, Sony initiated a lawsuit claiming that CBS has outstanding obligations from prior agreements. In response, CBS filed a counterclaim in November. Later on, Sony announced its intention to take over the distribution of the show, however, CBS challenged this decision in February.
In April, a judge permitted Sony to assume control over the distribution of these shows; however, just last week, the California State Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District, granted CBS’s request for a stay of execution, or supersedeas. As a result, CBS continues to be the current distributor of both shows while CBS’s appeal is ongoing. In simpler terms, the April decision has been temporarily paused while CBS appeals the decision.
Concerning the streaming agreement, Sony announced that it will broaden the audience for “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune” to a new generation of viewers. This will also make it easier for current fans to watch their beloved shows, thereby fostering a stronger connection with these iconic franchises among both old and new enthusiasts.
