Keanu Reeves is a remarkably versatile and intriguing figure in today’s Hollywood scene. Over the years, he has given outstanding performances across various genres, formats, and styles, yet there’s something enigmatic about him that keeps us guessing. From his iconic roles in the Matrix series to his unexpected appearances like in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (and many other projects), he consistently impresses, but what is it like working with him on set? This question intrigues many, and director Aziz Ansari from Good Fortune shares his insights.
I recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly to discuss my directorial debut, slated for release in the second half of 2025. Interestingly, before we started filming, I hadn’t had the pleasure of meeting Keanu Reeves, the iconic star from ‘Speed’. However, our time together on set went smoothly (except for that one instance when he tripped over a rug and sustained an injury for the first time in his career). I can only say wonderful things about him. His veteran presence reminded me of the last true cinematic legends, exuding that classic “movie star aura”. Keanu, you’re amazing!
Keanu is someone who stands out in a select group of highly distinguished individuals. He’s not commonly seen, and there’s still an air of mystery surrounding him. He maintains a unique, classic Hollywood charm that sets him apart from others, almost as if he resides in another world – one we might find it hard to reach or interact with.
It seems that the private and professional personas of Reeves aren’t dissimilar, which provides comfort to fans like me. It’s understandable why he captivates audiences in every role he plays due to his deliberate veil, a strategy that clearly appeals to many.
During his performance, he casually noted that it was the moment he met the actor from Bill & Ted that he realized he simply had to secure him for a role.
As soon as I saw him, he had long hair and everything, and I was like, ‘This has got to be him.’
As a devoted fan, I must say that their first encounter seemed straight out of a captivating movie performance by Mr. Reeves! Strangely enough, I could almost hear the thoughts of the talented actor from “Master of None” echo in my mind. It’s true, opposites can draw one another, and this comedian and icon are an unanticipated yet delightful match.
Ansari expressed again his excitement about the entire project, starting from the auditions to discussing his first appearance. In simpler terms, he said that he’s delighted from the initial casting process up until now when we’re discussing his debut.
I was utterly astonished! It completely transformed the film into something new, and my excitement level remains sky-high. I’m still buzzing with enthusiasm!
I’m excited for this upcoming release, as he’s being hailed as a “budget guardian angel.” It’s intriguing that the novice director returned to work on this project following the cancellation of his initial directorial debut due to off-set drama with lead actor Bill Murray, starring Ansari. In my view, Reeves was an excellent choice for a fresh start, particularly with longtime friend Seth Rogen by his side, both contributing to the film.
I’m excitedly counting down the days for the new comedy, but I’m equally eager for the action movie, “Ballerina,” starring Keanu Reeves. Though details about “Ballerina” are scarce, it promises to broaden the “John Wick” universe. The question is: will we or Aziz Ansari get a deeper glimpse into Reeves’ acting abilities after “Good Fortune” premieres? Only time can answer that.
