What to Expect from DC’s Next Movie After the Ending of Superman

Spoilers ahead for the plot and ending of Superman.

In this rebooted DC universe, Superman serves as the first installment but feels like a continuation of an ongoing tale, jumping over the character’s well-known origins and moving three years into his superhero career. As a result, the question regarding the ownership of Krypto, a lovable dog breed resembling Gunn’s pet dog, Ozu, is not resolved until late in the film. Referred to as a “foster situation” by Superman, Krypto is adorable and mischievous, and it’s easy to guess his owner given the next DC Comics movie scheduled for release. However, Gunn’s movie confirms this with an unexpected appearance of a revamped version of a familiar character in an unexpected cameo.

After saving the day from Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), Superman (David Corenswet) retires to his Fortress of Solitude, accompanied by Krypto. As the movie winds down, Kara Zor-El, Superman’s Kryptonian cousin and Supergirl in this version (played by Milly Alcock from House of the Dragon), stumbles into Superman’s icy hideaway, quite tipsy. Krypto enthusiastically attacks her, while Clark informs one of his android assistants that Kara, who has recently turned 21, is a partygoer. Since red suns don’t grant Kryptonians superpowers and invulnerability like Earth’s yellow sun, she can drink alcohol.

In this upcoming solo film, the version of Kara we see is quite different from recent portrayals. Unlike the serious Sasha Calle and Melissa Benoist, Alcock’s Kara sports a casual, laid-back vibe. She’s seen wearing a loose jacket over her classic red-and-blue tights, which gives off an aura of having just returned home after a night out during spring break.

In essence, we don’t get to witness much of Supergirl in the final episodes of Superman, but it hints at the direction for her standalone movie directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, set to release next June. Originally titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, this project shares a name with a 2021 comic series penned by writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely. The story starts with a forlorn Supergirl escaping her sorrows by traveling across planets under red suns.

It appears that King’s work serves as a significant influence for the revamped DC Studios, as the director has been showcasing artwork from other comics by King. One such comic served as the foundation for the mid-credits scene of Superman, and recently, he posted a backstage photo of Alcock perusing “Woman of Tomorrow” in preparation for her role.

As a movie enthusiast, I must admit that Supergirl’s portrayal in the upcoming film feels more like a bubbly sorority sister, but beneath her carefree demeanor lies depth that’s yet to be fully revealed. Additionally, you can anticipate seeing Krypto, Supergirl’s loyal canine companion, quite frequently in the movie, as he was a constant presence by her side in the comic series “Woman of Tomorrow”.

The comic book also introduces Ruthye, a teenage protégé of Kara who seeks vengeance against a villain named Krem. In the film, these characters will be brought to life by Eve Ridley and Matthias Schoenaerts respectively. Lastly, Lobo, the popular anti-hero, will be played by Jason Momoa, who previously starred as Aquaman. Interestingly, Lobo is not a character from the comics, but it seems that his inclusion might not be as random as it appears; according to the director, Lobo was initially intended to co-headline “Woman of Tomorrow” with Supergirl.

It appears that Alcock’s portrayal of Kara will significantly differ from her Kansas counterpart, as a fresh take on the character is essential. Often, on-screen Supergirls have mirrored their era’s Supermen in various ways. For instance, Slater’s Supergirl resembled the cheerful heroine from the Christopher Reeve films, while Calle’s was an adaptation of Cavill’s brooding Superman, and Benoist’s was a reporter reminiscent of Clark Kent. However, Corenswet’s Superman embodies the boy scout spirit, contrasting Alcock who is set to bring a chaotic twist to Kara, which sounds intriguing.
