„What the f**k. No. This did not need to happen.” Creator of Deus Ex harshly criticizes the remaster

As a big fan, I always thought Deus Ex was a truly groundbreaking series, especially when it comes to immersive sims. It really helped shape gaming as we know it! But honestly, things haven’t been great for the franchise lately. It’s been almost a decade since we got a new Deus Ex game, and right now, all we’re getting is a remake of the very first one. What’s really worrying is that even someone like Jerry O’Flaherty, who was the Art Director on the original game, doesn’t seem thrilled with it. It just feels like something’s off, and it’s a little disheartening as a long-time fan.

The developer recently spoke with FRVR and shared a trailer for the upcoming Deus Ex Remastered, developed by Aspyr Media. His initial response to it was very direct.

Wow, this is unexpected and probably not a good thing. I feel bad for anyone affected. Honestly, if someone decided to go for it, okay then. I shouldn’t really be criticizing their choice.

The classic game Deus Ex is receiving visual improvements. Expect significantly updated lighting, water effects, and particle effects. The developers are also creating new character models with more fluid animations.

Okay, so I’ve been checking out the new version, and honestly, it feels off. Jerry O’Flaherty, whoever he is, apparently doesn’t agree with how Aspyr Media is going about things, and I have to say, the updated graphics just don’t capture the feeling of the original game. It kinda loses what made it special, you know?

The remastered version of Deus Ex is coming to PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch on February 5, 2026. Players will then be able to see if the game still captures the spirit of the original.
