In the third episode of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 titled ‘Devotion’, Nick takes a risky step, June finds herself pulled in different directions between various realms, and Aunt Lydia pays a visit to Janine. Please beware: spoilers are forthcoming!
In Season 6 Episode 2, Serena and June’s paths moved forward side by side. During this time, June got to share her past with her mother Holly, but their joyful reunion was cut short when it was learned that Luke and Moira were trapped in No Man’s Land.
In the meantime, Lawrence successfully persuaded Serena to lead New Bethlehem, a supposedly liberal island of Gilead, which presents a significant danger. Should it improve international ties, it might well seal the fate of the United States permanently.
Given these circumstances, Tuello teams up with Mayday, while Nick is being closely monitored by High Commander Wharton. This means Nick must tread carefully, particularly regarding June.
June and Nick are reunited once more
In Episode 3 of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6, we find June and Tuello in an empty warehouse close to the border. June becomes furious upon learning that Luke and Moira have been stranded in the lawless zone known as No Man’s Land for four consecutive days.
Mark defends by saying that Mayday’s mission is his own responsibility, and he’s merely assisting, but June counters, “Look here, Mark. The military backs Mayday, and it seems like you’re exploiting civilians for underhanded tasks.
I wholeheartedly affirm that these individuals are voluntary participants in our cause, fully aware of the challenges and consequences ahead. Our objective, as we strive against Gilead’s ruthless extremist Commanders, includes those who brought down the US’s plane during their attempt to rescue Hannah.
However, Luke and Moira were just retrieving a sack from the neutral territory called No Man’s Land. They thought it would be an easy task, but patrol officers unexpectedly appeared on the scene.
During their conversation, it emerges that Serena has taken over New Bethlehem. This revelation doesn’t catch June off guard since, as she puts it, Serena is always able to find a way to land on her feet.
Regarding New Bethlehem, Nick and Lawrence are getting ready to welcome a delegation of foreign diplomats with the aim of strengthening global connections.
A representative from Germany arrives, and upon Lawrence’s departure, this individual discloses a secret message intended for Nick: June Osborne can be found at the 17th milepost. Nick is aware of the actions required, but he’s undoubtedly grappling with conflicting loyalties between June and his duties in Gilead.
Despite the danger, he visits June, who reassures him that Nichole is secure and Holly, her mother, is still alive. The real reason for their meeting, however, is to rescue Luke and Moira.
She requests Nick to make a way for them to flee, as he’s reluctant because of the increased security presence, but he ultimately consents to assist them. However, June is adamant about accompanying him.
In the morning, Serena finds herself in New Bethlehem, and there appears Lawrence, carrying a plant and his characteristic skepticism.
As I delve deeper into his beliefs, I can’t help but feel a sense of unease about his non-religious stance. However, Lawrence reassures me, emphasizing that he’s on board for the right reasons and seeks my assistance. “We’ve wrecked this nation,” he says, “and now it’s our job to mend it.
Aunt Lydia finds out what happened to Janine
In the brand-new season of The Handmaid’s Tale, I found myself following Aunt Lydia on an intriguing mission. Her destination? The infamous Jezebels, all in search of my friend, Janine.
As she’s guided down the hallways, she observes the Marthas donning masks; Aunt Miriam clarifies that they do so to prevent enticing the patrons.
Or:
Guiding her through the halls, she spots the Marthas wearing masks, and Aunt Miriam mentions it’s to keep the patrons from being tempted.
Upon entering the main room, Aunt Lydia finds several women in different stages of being dressed or undressed, as well as some women apparently using illicit substances. Among these women, she recognizes Janine, who has been assigned to work as a sex worker within Gilead’s system.
In a more conversational style, we could say that Aunt Lydia says to her, “I’ll find a way to get you out of here,” but Janine replies, “Whenever you try to aid me, it seems like things just become more difficult instead.
Janine reminds Aunt Lydia that they are among the Handmaids forced to work at Jezebels, causing Aunt Lydia shock. “I was led to believe you’d be rewarded for your service,” Aunt Lydia replies, but Janine retorts, “Well, guess what? They deceived you.
Eventually, one of the patrons asks for Kitty, who’s known as Janine in this place, and Aunt Lydia tries one more time to concoct a strategy to aid her escape. However, Janine advises her that it would be better if she simply forgets about her.
Serena and Lawrence impress the skeptics
In the desolate area known as No Man’s Land, Nick and June make their way to a derelict water park, where they find Luke and Moira in trouble. June queries Nick about what made him decide to spy for Tuello, to which he responds, “I learned that you were injured.
Nick shares that he paid a visit to June when she was in the hospital, demonstrating that his affection for June remains unwavering.
The camera shifts to New Bethlehem, showing Serena and Wharton strolling together, following Lawrence as he guides the diplomats on a tour around this city.
Wondering where my daughter’s husband is,” I inquired, and she answered, “I can’t say for certain, but it appears he’s managing just fine on his own.
As Lawrence carries on with his address, the gathering pauses, yet his words continue to face doubt. Diplomat Louise voices her concern, stating that it’s impossible for her to return refugees to a place like Gilead, where its own citizens are still being harmed through mutilation and murder.
As a gamer speaking up, I’d say, “I guarantee that there won’t be any infringements on human rights, but I understand if some of you are skeptical, particularly regarding the treatment of women.
At this point, Serena steps in and proves why she was asked to help lead New Bethlehem.
She admits that she felt the same worries as you, and sadly, her situation confirms it. With Gilead’s tight control, she lost everything – her identity, her voice.
In a more simplified and conversational manner, it could be expressed as: “Feeling powerless in the past led me to act cruelly towards others. Now, I’m dedicating my life to making amends and asking for forgiveness every day.
I’m unsure if I can be forgiven, but I believe that God is leading me back here to offer me another opportunity to make things right.
She informs them that women in New Bethlehem are capable of reading, writing, and working, and then she reveals a compelling point – children. Serena presents Noah to the diplomats, leaving them greatly impressed.
As if that wasn’t enough, they also introduce Rose, who’s clearly expecting. Lawrence ends with a cryptic comment, “And here’s our proof of concept.” (As a gamer, I’m excitedly sharing this)
After cradling Noah, Louise proposes, “Should we have assurance about their security, we might propose a voluntary return for the refugees, but this would be subject to ongoing observation by the United Nations.
Wharton finds Serena’s abilities quite captivating. He expresses this to her by saying, “I must admit, I was genuinely taken aback.” It’s been a while since something has stirred me up as much as this.
Nick makes a snap decision
They return to the area known as No Man’s Land, where June and Nick engage in a conversation about their relationship. Nick is eager to ensure June’s safety by removing her from this place, yet she refuses to depart unless Luke and Moira are with her.
As Nick put it, “I’ve staked everything I own on rescuing your spouse,” he said. “That’s because you picked him. You went with Luke.
She tells him, “I waited for you, I’ve had you, and I loved you.” This expresses her enduring affection for him, but also indicates that Luke and Moira are significant parts of her life as well.
Nick admits, “I’m only able to feel this deeply about you, yet it seems like we keep losing each other.” However, on a deeper level, he acknowledges that their relationship may not be viable, but his love for her compels him to assist her.
Fortunately, Luke and Moira are both present. We find them concealed at the park’s souvenir shop, engaged in a heated discussion over their unsuccessful mission.
Eventually, Luke seems a bit uneasy around June, but Moira reassures him saying, “You don’t need to prove anything to me. You are the finest man I know, and that’s no exaggeration.
The conversation between Luke and Moira is momentarily halted as a person enters the store. Frightened, they both hide, but their fear quickly transforms into happiness upon hearing June’s voice. Despite the discomfort of Nick being present, they genuinely express their gratitude to him for all he has done.
After they exit, calamity ensues as two guards appear. Nick urges Luke, Moira, and June to hop into the vehicle, and then converses with the officers, acting as if he’s managing the predicament on his own.
The guards maintain that they must inform about it anyway, since it has become standard procedure for them to reveal any instance of rebellious behavior.
As I stand there, the camera pans to June, her eyes widening as she hears gunfire echoing in the distance. Moments later, Nick emerges from around the corner, a grim look on his face. It’s then I realize, he’s the one who fired at the guards.
This revelation brings a sense of relief to June, Luke, and Moira, but it also leaves Nick in a perilous predicament. He’s now walking a tightrope, with danger lurking just beyond every corner.
Lawrence gives Aunt Lydia a reality check
By the way, in good old New Bethlehem, Lawrence, Naomi, Wharton, Serena, and Rose were all jubilant following their victory.
Wharton queries Rose about Nick’s location, but she’s uncertain. Fortunately, Lawrence intervenes and takes responsibility, explaining, “I’m responsible for that. I dispatched him to handle a matter on our trading route.
The team contemplates the possibility of expanding Gilead into more progressive regions, but Wharton seems hesitant. However, Serena and Lawrence voice their approval for this concept.
When it’s time to leave, Serena requests of Wharton, “Could you possibly escort us home, Commander? I can’t get enough of discussing the promising future of New Bethlehem with you,” and they set off on their way.
As Lawrence and Naomi prepare for bed, an unsolicited visit from Aunt Lydia arises, urging them to reconsider giving Janine another opportunity. However, Naomi vehemently refuses, leaving in a huff, thus Lydia persists with her plea to Lawrence individually.
She shares with him her thoughts on Jezebels, likening it to a “hotbed of immorality,” but Lawrence counters, “At least it’s not the colonies. There, they still have a fighting chance to survive.
Aunt Lydia persists in presenting her point, insisting that the Handmaids were offering a holy duty. It seems she’s not fully comprehending the nature of the situation, and may be in some way avoiding acknowledging her role in Gilead’s oppressive rule.
Instead of saying it directly, Lawrence expressed his thoughts to her like this: “You know, Janine… she’s not around anymore. She disappeared the instant you took hold of her situation. It would be best for you to let go and start fresh.
Nick and June say goodbye… for now
Nick drives June, Luke, and Moira to Tuello. After they express their gratitude, Tuello warns Nick not to disappear without warning again.
Nick clarifies that it’s impossible for him to fulfill all his desires with a High Commander residing in his household. Tuello threatens, “Adhere to our deal or I’ll reveal your secrets,” but Nick counters, “I won’t let you do that if I end up being dead.
They provide June some private time with Nick, during which she queries him regarding his plans for dealing with the guardians. “I’ve got it under control,” he clarifies.
He suggests to June that she enjoys her life, but she responds, “Enough… don’t you see we’re always doing this? The whole ‘farewell’ routine. Let’s be honest. What are we trying to accomplish here?
He inquires, “What’s a good alternative phrase then?” Both of them concur on using “Talk to you later,” and they part ways separately.
