What is the ‘work doppelgänger’ trend? ‘I am Drew I am Danny’ song goes viral

As a seasoned TikTok enthusiast with a penchant for spotting trends that have the power to captivate millions, I find myself utterly enthralled by the recent resurgence of the ‘work doppelgänger’ challenge. It’s not every day that one stumbles upon such uncanny resemblances between complete strangers, and the ensuing confusion and amusement are a testament to the unique bond TikTok users share.

Users on TikTok revived an older social media fad, sharing videos featuring their coworkers who bear a striking resemblance to themselves.

The ‘work doppelgänger’ trend began as early as January 2021, with many TikTokers reigniting it in September 2024.

As a gamer, I’d say a “doppelganger” is like your digital clone in an alternate universe. Though they’re technically not real copies of me, the uncanny similarity between us has left some folks feeling a bit spooked.

To follow the current trend on TikTok, users mimic another individual by standing before the camera, mouthing the lyrics to the audio which says, “I am Drew, I am Danny, and we are not the same person.

I’m referring to a track called “We Are Not the Same Person” by Danny Gonzalez and Drew Gooden, released back in May of 2019.

As they perform the popular dance style, duos intertwine in a straightforward zigzag pattern with their arms. Numerous dancers also wink playfully at the camera, aware that their shared traits might astonish onlookers.

The TikToker known as ‘jordanlitzz’ deceived many of her viewers with a video featuring her ‘work twin’. She and her colleague bore such a strong resemblance to one another that jordanlitzz had to convince some viewers that she wasn’t pulling a prank.

“Wait, y’all are twins, right?” asked a viewer. “No,” the TikToker responded.

“How Long did it take your coworkers to tell you apart?” questioned TikTok’s official account.

The TikTok user ‘irelandklee’ gained popularity too, with people mistaking them for someone else at work due to the trend they followed. They described this as having a “work look-alike” – everyone from customers to coworkers believes they are one and the same person.

“Coulda fooled me!” exclaimed a viewer.

As a gamer, I’d say it like this: “Just like my online persona ‘sinnersinnerchxdinner,’ I keep my day job’s colleagues guessing too. One viewer even said, ‘You sure do confuse the customers every day.’ To that, I replied with a grin, ‘Yep, we do!’

“These are getting scary,” wrote another mistaken viewer.

Besides the popular phenomenon known as ‘work doubles’, TikTok users are also engaging in a practice called “rejection therapy”, which involves deliberately placing themselves in awkward or unfavorable circumstances as a means of building self-confidence over time.
