What is the ‘Maps’ dance on TikTok? Viral trend explained

As someone who has grown up with social media and witnessed countless trends come and go, I must admit that the ‘Maps’ dance trend has truly captured my heart (and feet)! It’s not every day that you stumble upon a dance that is as infectious and universally relatable as this one.

The popular “Maps” dance or the “They don’t love you like I love you” challenge has been dominating the TikTok platform recently.

In September 2024, a popular TikTok trend emerged, featuring a fast-paced version of the song ‘Maps’ by Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The trend highlights the well-known lyric, “Wait, they don’t love you like I love you,” which has become particularly catchy. This phrase sparked two different dance moves that quickly gained virality on the platform.

Initially choreographed by TikTok user southernbellesuzie, this dance move consists of bouncing downward and waving your fingers, swapping between beats. On September 14, 2024, she shared a video of herself dancing to the remix in a bathroom on TikTok.

In a short span of time, the video became incredibly popular, racking up more than 6.3 million views and 1.2 million likes within just fourteen days. The enthusiastic responses from viewers were overwhelming, as they adored the straightforward yet energetic choreography. Not long after, numerous individuals started sharing their own interpretations of the dance in their videos.

Five days after that, on September 19th, another TikTok user by the name of _18373563848 posted an alternative dance to the same ‘Maps’ sound. This particular dance includes moving one’s hips side-to-side, striking the hips with both hands, and concluding with a gesture resembling a stop sign.

This video also went viral, collecting over 2.6 million views and nearly 600,000 likes in a week. The stop sign gesture became a favorite, adding a playful twist to the song’s lyrics.

Ever since that point, these dances have been widely shared on TikTok during October, with numerous users imitating the steps.

The trend’s success is driven by its simple yet captivating choreography, as well as the upbeat remix of the song. Fans of the dance have called it a “masterpiece,” while others find the trend hilarious and entertaining.

A variety of users have incorporated their pets into the dance routine too, creating popular videos showcasing cute animals like cats, dogs, rabbits, and others mirroring the steps of user_18373563848.

To date, approximately 1.4 million videos have been shared using a fast-paced rendition of Yeah Yeah Yeah’s popular hit song. Notable personalities such as Joe Jonas, K-pop sensation Le Sserafim, Tate McRae, and The Kid Laroi are among those who have joined this trend.

Here’s the latest dance fad sweeping across TikTok, following the popular surge of the “I love your daughter” challenge on the platform.
