As someone who’s been following the cryptocurrency scene since its infancy, I must say I find the upcoming HBO documentary “Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery” both intriguing and skeptical. While the thought of finally unmasking Satoshi Nakamoto, the mysterious creator of Bitcoin, is tantalizing, my experience tells me to approach such claims with a grain of salt.
Before the release of the upcoming HBO documentary titled “Money Electric: The Bitcoin Enigma,” there’s already a stir over its assertion that it may unmask the real identity of Bitcoin’s creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, causing a wave of controversy.
It appeared for a moment that almost every person and their pet dog had become a cryptocurrency investor. The digital currency market soared to unprecedented levels during the pandemic, with Bitcoin hitting an all-time high of over $68,000, Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) gaining popularity as a contentious trend, and Elon Musk causing Dogecoin prices to skyrocket with a single tweet.
What you might not know is that cryptocurrencies aren’t new. In fact, the first known attempt to create a digital currency was in the ‘80s, and Bitcoin was officially launched in January 2009 amid the financial crisis.
Up until this point, the true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, the anonymous creator of Bitcoin, has yet to be revealed. But could the recent HBO documentary finally uncover the individual who might just be among the wealthiest people globally?
Skepticism casts doubt over HBO Bitcoin documentary
It appears that many online users are expressing disagreement following the unveiling of Money Electric: The Bitcoin Enigma, causing a stir on the internet.
Things kicked off on October 3rd, when producer Cullen Hoback posted HBO’s announcement about the documentary, along with the trailer and its scheduled release date (October 8th), on Twitter.

On Reddit, there’s a general skepticism about the possibility of uncovering Satoshi Nakamoto’s real identity. One person compared it to television shows that make sensational claims, stating that if the revelation were genuine, it would have been public knowledge by now instead of being saved for the premiere date.
One person stated, “Ignore the excitement, it’s merely promotional for the film.” Another said, “It’s impossible for any documentarian to reveal Satoshi; he was far too cunning and covered his tracks meticulously. It’s nothing of significance.
Many people have been expressing sentiments such as, “We’re all part of the same pioneer,” implying a shared ideology, with one individual putting it as, “We stand together in our pursuit of the decentralized ideal and the liberty embodied by Bitcoin.
Additionally, some individuals have proposed notable figures such as “Bitcoin Jesus” Roger Ver, a pioneer in the use of cryptocurrencies, who faced indictments for mail fraud, tax evasion, and submitting false tax returns earlier this year.
Another notable figure in the early days of Bitcoin was Hal Finney, as one Reddit user humorously put it, “I’d wager a Bitcoin that they will claim it’s Hal Finney. He’s the most likely candidate who can’t refute the claims or cause a fuss about the documentary since he’s no longer here.
As a gamer, I’d say, “I’ve got to call out Craig Wright – he thinks he’s the only one who’s Satoshi, the Bitcoin creator. But we all know better!
Producer has history of unmasking the unknown
Although there’s doubt over whether Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery will uncover Satoshi Nakamoto’s identity, others are hopeful due to creator Cullen Hoback’s track record.
Hoback has produced numerous successful documentaries, including the 2021 HBO series Q: Into the Storm, which exposed the authors of the QAnon conspiracy theory.
As a curious gamer, I find myself intrigued by this because it’s the same crew behind the QAnon docuseries. There’s a chance it could be engaging, but I’m not expecting any fresh insights on the topic.
It’s important to note that the person responsible for the camera in this documentary isn’t just anyone. The documentary is actually the newest project by Emmy-nominated Cullen Hoback, who received praise for his series Q: Into the Storm.
Len Sassaman theory resurfaces
As a gaming enthusiast putting on my detective hat, I’ve been hearing some intriguing whispers about a new docu-series suggesting that Len Sassaman could potentially be the man behind the creation of Bitcoin. Exciting times ahead!
Throughout his life, Sassaman, a well-known figure in the field, dedicated his efforts to enhancing digital safety and encryption. He was an active participant in the cypherpunk movement, a group that championed the use of cryptography as a means to safeguard privacy.
Apart from being skilled in internet security, he specialized in safeguarding emails and other digital communications. His work strongly resonated with the principles of decentralization and confidentiality that are inherent in the Bitcoin system.
Several individuals speculate that Sassaman might have been Satoshi Nakamoto, given his technological proficiency and the coincidental timing of his passing. In late 2011, he ended his life, mere months following the last public statement attributed to Nakamoto regarding Bitcoin.
Given that Sassaman was a person deeply committed to developing solutions for privacy preservation, it’s plausible that he possessed both the incentive and the expertise to maintain anonymity if, in fact, he is Satoshi Nakamoto.
Galaxy Digital’s research head, Alex Thorn, expressed on Twitter that he heard the upcoming HBO documentary (airing Oct 9) might identify Len Sassaman as Satoshi Nakamoto. In 2021, Evan Duffield had written a compelling article about this theory.
