In Jurassic World: Reborn, it’s not only about genetically modified dinosaurs; you’ll encounter the issue of hybridized mutant beasts too, such as the fearsome Distortus Rex.
As a diehard Jurassic Park enthusiast, I’m beyond excited to share that the latest Jurassic movie is now gracing the big screen! In our recent four-star review of Jurassic World Rebirth, we highlighted how it skillfully echoes the essence that made the original captivating. It certainly doesn’t disappoint when it comes to delivering heart-pounding thrills and sending chills down your spine!
In this movie, we follow an unconventional group made up of mercenaries and scientists, who are tasked by a drug company to capture dinosaurs. Their goal is potentially life-saving.
This film showcases a diverse crew consisting of mercenaries and researchers, working for a pharmaceutical corporation to catch dinosaurs. The purpose behind this could significantly benefit many lives.
However, their journey also leads them into confrontation with genetically engineered dinosaurs, such as a chilling hybrid of species and a terrifying modern adaptation of the Tyrannosaurus rex. The following discussion contains SPOILERS, as we delve into details about this new dino.
Introducing the Distortus rex
In the opening flashback scene of Jurassic World Reborn, the Distortus Rex is initially unveiled. This occurs due to an unexpected incident at the InGen research center on Isle Saint-Hubert, which was caused by a rebellious hip-hop artist. The mishap in this facility leads to a containment breach.
The final moment reveals the grotesque Distortus rex, snatching a human, flipping him over, before vanishing, leaving behind what seems to be its dinosaur meal.
Seventeen years have passed since then, and the remainder of the film unfolds in contemporary times, as a team embarks on an expedition to retrieve biological samples from the very island where the Distortus rex continues to reside, maintaining its peculiar appearance as it scavenges for sustenance.
How Alien inspired new Jurassic World Rebirth dinosaur
The Distortus Rex was InGen’s endeavor to genetically modify a T-Rex, but the experiment turned out disastrously. Instead of just T-Rex DNA, pieces from various other species were inadvertently incorporated into its genetic makeup, resulting in a deformed and abnormal creature.
The being towers almost 26 feet high and stretches approximately 47 feet long, yet tips the scales at roughly 20,000 pounds. However, its appearance is off-putting, with an oversized, distorted head that strongly resembles the Xenomorphs from Alien.
During an interview with film magazine Empire, director Gareth Edwards compared the creature design in his upcoming movie to this: “Imagine if the T-Rex was conceived by H.R. Giger, and then it mated with a Rancor.
Dave Vickery offers a different perspective, describing the effect as if another creature is draped around the T-Rex. The intention was to evoke both pity and fear, as the creature’s deformities have caused it discomfort, and there’s a burden upon it.
According to Vickery, Edwards demonstrated by crawling on all fours that he intended the D-rex to mimic its movement using its extra pair of arms. He also urged the visual effects team to let their creativity run wild when designing it.
According to Vickery, the entire experience was characterized by a deeply felt connection with Gareth, and we appreciated his eagerness to explore and his constant pursuit of fresh, innovative ideas.
He has no limits; when we first encountered him, he set an ambitious challenge: if you present more than six unreasonable designs for something, you haven’t pushed yourself hard enough. He values creativity and originality over the ordinary. In his perspective, it’s simpler to discover exceptional ideas by stepping back from the absurd rather than building up from the commonplace.
Not only is King Distortus far from ordinary, but he truly becomes extraordinary – especially when he begins to tear apart people at the peak of the film’s final moments.
