So, Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is kicking off with a seriously scary new Titan showing up. But, get this – Wyatt Russell’s character, Lee Shaw, casually mentions something even more mysterious called “Pulgasari.” It’s got me wondering what that’s all about!
The popular MonsterVerse series is back on Apple TV+, continuing right after the events of season one. Cate Randa, Keiko Miura, May Hewitt, and Shaw have all returned from their journey into the Hollow Earth.
So, we finally made it back to the surface, but things went south fast. We ended up right on Skull Island while Kong was totally losing it! The whole season’s gonna be about figuring out what’s driving him crazy and why he’s going on this rampage.
While many fans have speculated about which classic monsters could appear in Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, the show surprisingly features a lesser-known creature in one of its early flashback scenes.
What is Pulgasari in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2?
The story flashes back to Southern Chile in the 1960s, where a younger Lee Shaw, Keiko Miura, and Bill Randa are tracking a mysterious creature reported to appear along the coastline. During their expedition, Lee playfully teases Bill about his previous search for a ‘Pulgasari’ in Korea – a beast described as a mix of a bear and rhino with a peculiar appetite for metal.
The creature Pulgasari featured in Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is a nod to a 1985 film of the same name – a surprisingly collaborative effort between North Korea, Japan, and China. As Bill explains in the series, Pulgasari originates from Korean folklore and served as the basis for the movie.
In this monster movie, a blacksmith crafts a tiny Pulgasari statue from rice and prays for it to come alive, hoping it will protect his family from their cruel king. The statue magically comes to life when his daughter’s blood drips onto it. The Pulgasari grows larger and stronger with every bit of metal it consumes, eventually becoming a powerful force against the king and his army.
While not as famous as monsters like Godzilla and King Kong, the film Pulgasari was a cool way to explore Korean folklore. It hasn’t shown up yet in the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, but the show’s creators still have a chance to include it in the story.
