As a fan who’s been through my fair share of dark comedies and thrillers, I must say that Netflix’s latest offering, Murder Mindfully, has piqued my interest. The premise of a successful lawyer turned accidental murderer at a mindfulness retreat sounds like a perfect blend of Nine Perfect Strangers and Breaking Bad – two shows I hold in high regard.

As a devoted fan, I couldn’t help but feel thrilled when Netflix responded to our collective pleas for more Breaking Bad-like vibes by creating “Murder Mindfully” – a fresh, fashionable comedy that delivers just as promised!

This year, I’ve stumbled upon some surprisingly fantastic TV series – take Baby Reindeer for instance, who would have thought it could soar to such heights from its humble beginnings?

Currently, Netflix is attempting to capture the essence of another blockbuster hit, Breaking Bad. This time, instead of a clandestine meth operation, it’s a covert murder mystery that they are focusing on.

I’d like to discuss “Murder Mindfully,” a subtle dark comedy that recently appeared on the streaming platform. However, you might be wondering, what’s the story behind this show?

What is Murder Mindfully about?

Mindfully Murdered delves into the life of Björn Diemel, a prosperous attorney, whose life takes an unexpected turn as he unintentionally commits murder during a mindfulness retreat.

In a humorous yet dark twist, imagine the series as “Nine Unusual Individuals,” where instead of a wellness retreat, our protagonist, a mafia attorney named Björn, seeks a better work-life balance at a mindfulness class. However, he soon learns some unconventional stress management techniques – one of which happens to be homicide.

If the TV show’s title seems vaguely recognizable, it might be because it’s adapted from a novel with the same name, penned by Karsten Dusse.

“Bjorn faces a tough decision: fix his work-life balance or risk losing his wife Katharina, along with their daughter. To resolve this issue, he reluctantly joins a mindfulness class, which surprisingly proves to be life-changing for him. He becomes calmer, more focused, and gains clarity about what truly matters in life. However, when Bjorn’s client and ruthless crime boss Dragan Sergowicz tries to encroach upon his family time, he recalls his commitment to inner peace – leading him to take drastic measures against the crime boss.

It’s no surprise that the TV series closely follows its original storyline. If you appreciated the dark tone in the past, you probably won’t be let down this time either.

If you opt for the English translation of the book, keep in mind that the TV adaptation will be in German, complete with English subtitles.

Is it worth watching?

The series hasn’t received an official rating from Rotten Tomatoes yet, but it’s been described as a “hidden gem” or “overlooked success”, debuting with minimal attention.

If you’re searching for a show that offers an enjoyable mix of humor and danger, then “Murder Mindfully” is worth considering. It’s quite entertaining and surprisingly endearing, largely due to Tom Schilling’s compelling portrayal of the leading role.

Charles Hartford from ButWhyTho stated: “Murder Mindfully offers an engaging experience. It boasts compelling characters and an unexpected storyline that hooks the audience into its universe, despite not reaching the heights of exceptional TV series.
