As a lifelong fan of Tyler Perry’s work, I was beyond excited when Beauty in Black dropped on Netflix. Having grown up watching Madea and her hilarious antics, I was ready to dive into this new drama.
Netflix has recently added another popular series to its lineup, and Tyler Perry’s “Beauty the Black” is causing quite a stir among viewers. So, what’s this show all about?
After several weeks of domination from true crime and documentaries, a sleek and sexy drama has finally fought its way to the top of the Netflix charts.
On October 24, Beauty in Black became part of the streamer’s fresh TV series lineup. Due to positive buzz, it has quickly risen to the top position. Is it worth watching? Here’s what Beauty in Black is all about:
Here’s everything you need to know about Tyler Perry’s new Netflix hit.
What is Netflix’s Beauty in Black about?
The storyline of Beauty in Black centers around two women, Kimmie and Mallory, whose paths cross as they strive to leave an impact on the world.
Originally residing under the roof of her mother but subsequently evicted, Kimmie (Taylor Polidore Williams) finds employment as an exotic dancer at the Magic City strip club. Concurrently, Mallory (Crystle Stewart) manages a hair care empire in partnership with her affluent family.
In a clash of their realities, Kimmie and Mallory are prepared to go to great lengths just to make it through, regardless of what it takes.
The 16-episode series was created by Tyler Perry, who has a multi-year first-look deal with the streaming service. Earlier this year, his new movie Mea Culpa also become a huge talking point for the platform (though not necessarily for the right reasons).
Currently, the series holds the top position among TV shows on Netflix. At present, only the first part has been made available; the release date for the second part remains undetermined.
Is it worth watching?
Despite facing criticism for excessively dramatic storylines and lack of originality in its plot, numerous viewers have expressed their intention to return for the next installment of Beauty in Black.
At present, the show is rated at 50% on Rotten Tomatoes. On social media platforms, viewers are criticizing the series heavily, labeling it as “absurd” and a “disaster”, yet there’s an indication that they might continue watching it.
One user admitted they had indeed completed #BeautyInBlack, found themselves enjoying it, and is eagerly anticipating the release of Part 2, slated for spring 2025.
Another said: “Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black is an absolute train wreck of a series and the irony is once you start, you can’t stop watching. Watched the entire eight episode season and I’m left with a blank face.”
Someone expressed that ‘Beauty In Black’ shows promise, but it seems misaligned somehow.” They went on to say, “The acting, the rhythm, and the narrative progression all feel strange and haphazardly constructed. It’s like everything is happening at once, making it too much to take in. It’s unfortunate because there appears to be a lot of potential in the plot.
As a gamer, I’ve come across some reviews that described the series as “the most preposterous nonsense” they’d ever encountered. Another comment read: “Tyler Perry keeps using the same old storylines and repackaging them under new titles… it’s the same script with a different cast! After this, I won’t be giving him another chance.
Will there be a Beauty in Black Season 2?
In essence, we can definitely expect “Beauty in Black Part 2” as there are still eight remaining episodes in the 16-episode series.
Essentially, it’s not a full second season, but more like an extended part. Netflix hasn’t given a specific release date for Part 2 yet, and details about whether the upcoming episodes were already shot are still under wraps.
Even though the series has only aired half of its episodes on Netflix, it’s clearly gaining traction. This could mean that there might be several more seasons to come.
