As a woman who has experienced the chilling reality of a man like Rodney Alcala, Cheryl Bradshaw’s story resonates deeply with me. Her brave decision to reject him on The Dating Game may have saved her life, but it also left an indelible mark on hers. It’s heartbreaking to see how the attitudes towards women at that time allowed a dangerous man like Alcala to roam free for over a decade, preying on innocents.
In her initial directorial effort, Anna Kendrick delves into a genuinely sad real-life crime story titled Woman of the Hour. The film’s conclusion mirrors reality yet continues to deliver a sharp commentary on deeply rooted sexism within societal structures.
The recently released film offers a unique perspective within the true crime genre, serving as a welcome change following the controversy surrounding “Monsters”. Our four-star review praised it by saying, “Kendrick doesn’t overcomplicate things or dwell excessively on gory details – she focuses on evoking emotion. Ryan Murphy, take note.
The narrative of Woman of the Hour primarily revolves around serial killer Rodney Alcala, however, a secondary storyline follows Cheryl Bradshaw, a real-life woman who narrowly avoided danger when she picked Alcala as a suitor on The Dating Game in 1978. As her intuition quickly alerted her, she made the wise choice.
As a fervent admirer, I found myself instinctively withdrawing from our planned rendezvous due to Alcala’s unsettling aura. This chilling anecdote, as penned by Ian McDonald in collaboration with Kendrick, paints a vivid picture of a reality where countless women’s warnings were ignored, resulting in tragic outcomes. A word of caution: the following account may contain spoilers and could potentially be distressing to some viewers.
Woman of the Hour ending explained
In the climax of Woman of the Hour, there’s a semblance of justice served when Rodney Alcala gets apprehended. Specifically, he’s caught at a gas station along a highway and taken into custody by the police. This part of the narrative closely mirrors real-life events.
Earlier on, Daniel Zovatto’s character, Alcala, encounters a runaway teenager named Amy, played by Autumn Best. He employs his enthusiasm for photography to persuade her to join him on a trip to the mountains, where they can capture stunning images together.
In the course of the photo session, Alcala assaults and sexually violates her; this incident transpires off-camera. Upon regaining consciousness, she finds herself restrained, sporting bruises and bloodstains, with her trousers around her ankles. Alcala is nearby, weeping.
In a remote location, Amy courageously feigns agreement as if she willingly participated in the events. She inquires about his well-being, then subtly hints, “It seems things became quite chaotic last night… Would you perhaps keep this incident private? I’d be terribly mortified.
Amy requested to return to his residence, and he granted her wish, hinting at Alcala’s characteristics as a genuine sociopath. He lacked the emotional depth or compassion to grasp that Amy was distressed.
Following his departure in the car, he pulls over momentarily to relieve himself, leaving Amy behind. In a hurry, she dashes off towards a nearby restaurant, managing to contact the authorities. Upon exiting the restroom, Alcala notices that Amy is missing, and soon hears the approaching wail of police sirens in the distance.
In a way that mirrors actual events, this scenario resembles what happened on February 14, 1979. On that day, the perpetrator gave a ride to Monique Hoyt, who was 15 years old, in Riverside County. However, before taking her to a secluded location, he subjected her to a sexual assault at his own apartment.
Towards the closing moments of “Woman of the Hour,” a message appeared saying that a young runaway managed to evade Rodney Alcala by asking him to maintain their meeting as confidential.
It’s even more astonishing because, despite her having him arrested and submitting a police report regarding the incident, he managed to secure his release on bond.
The movie underscores the shortcomings of those in power, as it reveals that after his release, he went on to kill a 21-year-old woman and a 12-year-old girl.
It took until the end of that year for him to be re-arrested, and it was then that the police started to comprehend the extent of his criminal activities. Initially charged with seven murder cases, some professionals speculate that the actual number of victims could reach up to 130.
In Woman of the Hour’s concluding statement, it is mentioned that for more than a dozen years, Alcala faced no repercussions despite numerous reports about him being made to the authorities by both survivors and ordinary citizens.
What happened to Cheryl Bradshaw?
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share that, after her fortunate escape from The Dating Game, Cheryl Bradshaw, brilliantly portrayed by Kendrick, is seen to depart Los Angeles and relinquish her ambitious pursuit of an acting career in Woman of the Hour.
In the final scenes of the recently released film, it’s revealed that her character “moved away from California to lead a secluded life and start a family.” This background made it challenging for Kendrick and McDonald to develop Bradshaw’s narrative.
However, her story is portrayed with reverence, reflecting the societal norms towards women during that era. In reality and in “Woman of the Hour,” Bradshaw indeed participated in a dating game show, and she chose Alcala among the three prospective partners presented to her.
Apart from confirming her date cancellation with Alcala, she shared her rationale during an uncommon interview for Sydney Telegraph in 2012. She revealed to the media outlet that when they met, he made her feel uneasy and creepy, which led her to refuse his proposal. She had no intention of meeting him again.
Woman of the Hour extends Bradshaw’s story by portraying a fictitious interaction where she goes for a drink with Alcala straight after the show.
During their date, his temperament fluctuated unpredictably, causing her to feel unsettled. Upon discovering that she’d provided a false phone number, she felt cornered and openly expressed her unwillingness to continue seeing him. In a low voice, he threatened, “You’re in for a world of hurt.
After that, he heads towards her car and confronts her, but he steps back when a gang of men exits the studio instead.
Later on, criminal profiler Pat Brown contemplated if Bradshaw’s rejection might have intensified Alcala’s violent impulses. Remarkably, Alcala went on to kill at least three women after this meeting, leading Brown to ponder: “What impact did that have on his thoughts?” He shared this thought with CNN.
“He might find that unpleasantly, as psychopaths often struggle with rejection. To them, it seems like there must be a problem with the person being rejected: ‘She deceived me, she was difficult to win over, she wanted something from me.’
What I’m saying here isn’t about assigning blame to others, but rather emphasizing that Alcala was an extremely dangerous individual, possibly a psychopath, with little or no capacity for empathy. He was someone who probably should have been imprisoned much earlier than he was.
