A recent study by GameDiscoverCo. looked at how often games on Steam get purchased after being added to a user’s wishlist, broken down by game genre. This led to a conversation on Reddit about potential improvements to Steam’s wishlist feature. Currently, Steam lets you sort your wishlist in a few ways – by price, release date, when you added the game, or even review score. You can also manually rearrange it, but many users find this difficult to manage with large wishlists. The discussion centers around what features Steam users would find most helpful for their wishlists.
Steam users discuss what kinds of features would be great to add to Steam wishlists
For smaller game developers hoping to gain recognition, it’s a smart move to encourage players to add their game to wishlists. The idea is that when the game launches, enough of those wishlists will turn into actual sales, helping the game succeed financially. Many Steam users don’t realize that wishlists do more than just help you remember games you’re interested in. Steam actually sends you notifications when a game on your wishlist gets a major update – like a demo release, full launch, or a sale. This makes the wishlist feature one of the easiest and most effective marketing tools available to game creators on Steam.

The most popular comment on this Reddit post suggested adding more ways to organize wishlists. Users would really like to be able to create custom categories or multiple lists. One user, javierm885778, explained they use their wishlist for everything – games they plan to buy, games they want to follow, and games they’re waiting for a sale on. Having multiple lists would solve this, allowing Steam to ask users which list they want to add a game to when they add it to their wishlist.
As a Steam user, I was really hoping to see a simple wishlist filter after Steam Next Fest. It just ended, and someone pointed out that Next Fest already shows you which games on your wishlist have demos! Steam does this on the Next Fest event page, and even for other themed events. It would be amazing if we could use that same system to automatically filter our entire wishlist – maybe just by whether a game has a demo available, or even by genre tags. It feels like a really useful feature that’s totally within reach!
I’m always discovering new games, which means my Steam wishlist is constantly getting longer. It’s become hard to keep track of everything on it. While the current system of adding games with one click is convenient, especially for those who don’t play often, better sorting and filtering options would be really helpful – not just for players, but for game developers and Steam too.
