As a long-time Marvel fan and avid follower of the intricate tapestry that is the MCU, I must say that Jac Schaeffer has truly outdone herself with the enchanting saga of WandaVision and Agatha All Along. It’s like she’s been spinning yarns in her cauldron, concocting a potion that leaves us spellbound with each new revelation!
Major spoilers ahead for the final two episodes of Agatha All Along.
In the second-to-last episode of “Agatha All Along”, Agatha performed an unexpected act of selflessness. Instead of handing over Billy to her former partner (Death), she bravely gave up her own life, enabling him to carry on living. This action from Agatha could appear sincere considering what we’ve discovered about her and her son Nicholas. However, there’s usually a catch, as the phrase “but…” often suggests.
In simpler terms, we’ve come to know Agatha as someone more concerned with herself, labeled a witch hunter and thief of power. We learn early on that she possesses the Darkhold to shield herself from Death. However, it’s surprising that she would give up her life. Considering the series’ tendency to play with textual elements, we wonder why she chooses to do this in an episode that isn’t the final one.
The program has previously touched upon this theme; in episode five, Agatha’s mother appeared as a ghost. Given that Agatha is known to go to great lengths to get ahead, even resorting to begging, borrowing, and stealing resources, it’s plausible that she might consider her mother as one such resource. However, is it truly theft when you’re taking from the comic book version of yourself? This is a question worth pondering.
In the comics, Agatha Harkness is primarily known for two main traits. Initially, she served as a caregiver, looking after Franklin Richards, who is the son of Mister Fantastic and Invisible Woman (to be played by Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby in an upcoming adaptation). Later on, she evolved into a magical mentor to Wanda, while also providing childcare for Billy and Tommy, the twins of Wanda. If you’re familiar with the story, you know who they are!
Agatha’s second defining trait is that she is a ghost. In a manner reminiscent of comic books, she sometimes resurfaces after brushing off death, but she also frequently acquires new afflictions sporadically, often inflicted by others—be it Wanda or even her own son.
The last episode of “Agatha All Along” primarily focuses on Agatha’s tragic tale of losing her son, who contrasts significantly with his comic book character. We eventually discover the true story behind the Witches’ Road, revealing Agatha’s cunning nature. After this revelation, Agatha starts tormenting Billy, prompting him to return to her house and try to exorcise her. A poignant aspect of Agatha’s character is revealed at this point: she cannot bear the thought of facing her son in the afterlife. She clings to power, but it also serves as a means to evade confronting the consequences of her past actions, such as her long history of deceit and the many witches she left dead. This fear stems from the reunion she anticipates with her son, Nicky.
This character development for Agatha significantly sets her apart from the typical portrayal of her in comics, as she doesn’t deliver prophetic statements and shows neither humor nor fear. Instead, it raises intriguing questions, such as: Since Death is a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and lowercase ‘death’ is mostly final except for exceptions like ghosts and body-swapping twins, are there other possible loopholes?
In the first episode, Agatha revealed her plan to Wanda, introducing a new character with a name and a body but not a face – a noticeable absence of Elizabeth Olsen from both the credits and the screen itself. The series then proceeded, making it clear that despite Wanda casting a significant shadow over many characters, she was not the central focus. Some might say the story was about her all along. However, beyond Agatha’s storyline, could Wanda reappear? Or, given his comic book background as a warlock and father of the Salem’s Seven, could we see young Nicholas Scratch emerge as a villainous counterpart to both Billy and Agatha in their quest to find the resurrected Tommy? The potential return of Scratch could provide strong character motivation for Agatha, adding an intriguing layer to the story.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Agatha Harkness’ depiction is largely influenced by modern comic book versions of the character. For instance, in the 2015 Scarlet Witch comic series, she appears more dry and sarcastic compared to her past portrayals. Additionally, while she was usually depicted as an elderly woman with white hair, a 2019 Captain America series started the process of de-aging her, making her less like a grandma and more physically capable. This change seems appropriate considering how frequently she seems to be killed off. Perhaps being younger will help her achieve something akin to ‘final girl’ status?
In essence, the character Agatha Harkness has been set up as a contemporary counterpart to Wanda Maximoff from the start in ‘WandaVision’, and her role in ‘Multiverse of Madness’ suggests that any potential reconciliation between them will take some time. By mentoring Billy in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, Agatha gets a chance at redemption and also contributes to an ongoing storyline within the Marvel Cinematic Universe: the formation of the Young Avengers.
Regarding the upcoming “Captain America: Brave New World” and the miniseries from 2025, it appears that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is planning to emphasize classic superhero themes. Since Agatha and Billy were last seen in “WandaVision” three years ago, it’s challenging to predict when we might see them again. However, let’s keep our fingers crossed that Jac Schaeffer, the creator of both series, gets another chance to wrap things up—she’s consistently produced some of the best Marvel shows on Disney+. After all, three is a powerful number—let it be!
