People are questioning if they have a deep backstory, but does every property need one? Look at the movie Battleship – it didn’t have established lore beforehand. Sony has officially acquired the rights, but currently, no director, writer, actors, or producers are involved. They haven’t even decided if it will be animated or live-action. The simple fact is Labubus are incredibly popular right now, and any studio would be foolish not to attempt a film adaptation. Plus, if Sony is delaying the sequel to KPop Demon Hunters until 2029, a live-action Labubus movie might be the faster route to release. They need to capitalize on the hype before the trend fades.
Labubus, adorable alien-like figures, became incredibly popular after being sold by the Chinese company Pop Mart during their live streams on TikTok. For the past year and a half, you’ve likely seen them everywhere – from protests to attached to Rihanna’s handbag, and even placed on Karl Marx’s grave. Before their recent fame, Labubus originally appeared as a supporting character in the book series The Monsters by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung, meaning there was existing creative material to work with.
