Lightdox has gained worldwide distribution rights for the movie “Welded Together,” directed by Belarusian filmmaker Anastasiya Miroshnichenko. This film will make its first appearance in the International Competition at Sheffield DocFest, and it is depicted as a powerful exploration of resilience, sacrifice, and sisterhood.
Katya is a young woman who spends her days as a welder in a workshop. Orphaned at a young age, she embarks on an emotional quest to find her biological family – a mission to mend the pieces of her past, much like how she bonds metal at her job. Through heartache and disillusionment that come her way, it’s Katya’s deep affection for her younger half-sister that keeps her going, as she strives to shield the girl from the harshness of life.
The concept for the artwork titled ‘Welded Together’ originated from a brief news clip featuring a young female welder. While no details about her personal life were provided, just her unique profession was highlighted. However, there was an inexplicable allure to this young woman that left a lasting impression on me and kept replaying in my mind.
Upon meeting her and learning more about her background, I found a strong connection as her life journey mirrored my own feelings deeply. The movie portrays an emotional tale, implying that the toughest choices we face can often be the purest demonstrations of affection.
The agreement was facilitated by Anna Berthollet from Lightdox and Valérie Montmartin from Little Big Story.
As a cinephile, I wholeheartedly agree with Berthollet’s words about Miroshnichenko’s masterpiece. This film exudes an exceptional cinematic charm and carries deep emotional resonance – it’s intimate, unyielding, and remarkably human. The story of Katya, a tale that is at once tender and heart-wrenching, encapsulates the quiet bravery of those who love and protect in even the most challenging situations.
Berthollet also praised Miroshnichenko’s audacity as a filmmaker, commending her ability to shed light on hidden struggles with sensitivity and artistic flair. It is precisely this boldness that makes us proud to support her exceptional work.
Montmartin and Raphaël Pelissou from Little Big Story expressed: “Ever since learning about the project and meeting Anastasiya at IDFA 2022, we’ve been profoundly touched by the film’s breathtaking aesthetics and raw power. We admire Katya, the protagonist, as she mirrors Anastasiya’s own courage and skill as a director. ‘Welded Together’ tackles difficult truths while maintaining optimism, and its compassionate, female-focused viewpoint aligns with the kind of cinema we are pleased to support at Little Big Story.
The cinematography is handled by Pavel Romanenya, while the editing responsibilities are shared between Kasia Boniecka and Stanislav Kalilaska. The music for this production is created by Rui Reis Maia.
The movie was created by Montmartin and Pelissou at Little Big Story in France, Iris Lammertsma and Babet Touwfor at Witfilm in the Netherlands, and Anton Iffland Stettner and Eva Kuperman at Stenola Productions in Belgium. It was also made with the involvement of France Télévisions, in partnership with BBC Storyville, and as a joint production with RTBF Télévision Belge.
As an ardent film enthusiast, I’m proud to share that I, Miroshnichenko, earned my degree in documentary film directing from the prestigious Belarusian State Academy of Arts. My debut full-length documentary, “Crossroads,” which was released in 2014, is a thought-provoking narrative about a homeless artist. This profound piece made its grand entrance at the 30th Warsaw International Film Festival, where it captured the special mention jury award and audience’s hearts, taking home the audience award as well.
In her first full-length documentary titled “Debut” (2017), she offers a personal exploration into the lives of incarcerated women in Belarus. This documentary made its debut at the 30th IDFA edition held in Amsterdam. The film was chosen as Belarus’s official entry for the Oscars in the best foreign language film category, and it was also added to the Academy’s documentary section.
