‘Welcome to Wrexham’ Renewed for Season 5 at FX as Spinoff ‘Necaxa’ With Eva Longoria Sets Summer Premiere

The FX documentary series chronicling the journey of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney as they own Wrexham AFC, the Welsh soccer team, has been granted another season – its fifth!

Furthermore, FX has scheduled a summer debut for “Necaxa,” a new documentary series produced by the creators of “Welcome to Wrexham.” As exclusively revealed by EbMaster in April 2024, Reynolds and McElhenny acquired a share in Mexico’s Club Necaxa following their successful venture with Wrexham AFC. In July of the same year, FX approved a documentary series modeled after “Wrexham” about this soccer team, which Eva Longoria is also an investor in.

According to a fresh outline, “Necaxa” portrays Longoria as he endeavors to revitalize one of Mexico’s most historic and renowned football clubs, with assistance from Reynolds and McElhenny. The show traces a tumultuous, transformative period characterized by staff changes, career-altering injuries, and the unyielding resilience of a team striving against all odds to exceed expectations and bring hope to Aguascalientes, Mexico. Previously a dominant force in Mexican football, Club Necaxa has spent years dealing with instability such as relocations, relegation struggles, and almost constant reinvention. Though its glory days have occasionally faded from the national limelight, a fervent group of dedicated fans persistently hope, holding onto the belief that their cherished ‘Rayos’ will one day regain their former glory.

Rob and Ryan played a significant role in making Wrexham AFC one of the most remarkable sports tales ever, and the events unfolding in Wrexham, Wales are nothing short of enchanting. Joining forces with Eva Longoria, they aim to foster the ambitions and passions of Necaxa fans and the Aguascalientes community too,” said Nick Grad, head of FX Entertainment. “With our collaboration with Disney+ Latin America starting this summer for Necaxa, everyone is eager to witness them replicating the same affection and backing they’ll provide in the fifth season of Welcome to Wrexham as the club embarks on the Championship; a new chapter in its extraordinary tale.

The executive producers of “Necaxa” are Longoria, Reynolds, McElhenny, Cris Abrego, Rachelle Mendez, Nick Frenkel, Jackie Cohn, George Dewey, Alex Fumero, and Diana E. Gonzales. This series is the collaborative effort of Hyphenate Media Group, More Better Productions, Maximum Effort, and 3 Arts Entertainment production companies.

In the fifth season of “Welcome to Wrexham”, we’ll witness the football club as they embark on their first journey in the EFL Championship, following three successive promotions. Meanwhile, the fourth season is already being shown, with its premiere happening on May 15th.

The executive producers for this series are McElhenney, Reynolds, Humphrey Ker (executive director of Wrexham AFC), Josh Drisko, Bryan Rowland, Jeff Luini, Nick Frenkel, George Dewey, along with Andrew Fried, Dane Lillegard, Sarina Roma, and Andy Thomas from Boardwalk Pictures. The series is produced by More Better Productions, Maximum Effort, 3 Arts Entertainment, and Boardwalk Pictures as well.
