In a recent conversation, actress Mary-Louise Parker announced that the revival of the series “Weeds” has been called off. Parker portrayed Nancy Botwin in all eight seasons of the popular Showtime comedy, where she played a young widow who began selling marijuana to support her family. A possible sequel was hinted at in 2019, with Parker expected to return to her iconic TV character; however, over five years later, the revival still hasn’t moved forward.
Actress Mary-Louise Parker, known for her role in CBS’s “Elsbeth”, has confirmed that the anticipated reboot of the Showtime series “Weeds” has been cancelled and is not progressing (as of now) due to lack of updates from writer Victoria Morrow for several years.
During an exclusive chat with TopMob while discussing MGM+’s “The Institute”, Parker shared some insights about the proposed reboot of “Weeds” and why it didn’t come to fruition. In his own words, he expressed that the concept for the reboot was “extremely intriguing,” but unfortunately, its cancellation was a sudden decision.
Initially, I had planned for the event to happen in Copenhagen, which I found to be an excellent suggestion. However, it occurred suddenly and unexpectedly, almost as if it was about to happen multiple times.
In her words, this latest attempt at a reboot almost reached its goal, but ultimately ended in cancellation. She referred to the prolonged build-up as “a drawn-out process.
Last week, we had planned a meeting for this matter on Thursday, but it got cancelled on Monday. It was quite an anticipation-filled wait, and we were looking forward to collaborating again. Unfortunately, the cancellation left us feeling disappointed.
When asked about the possibility of the show returning in the future, Parker expressed hope but admitted that she isn’t certain how long she can continue working on movie sets.
I have my doubts. To be honest, I’m not sure if I can keep working on movie sets for much longer.
Developed by “Orange Is the New Black” producer Jenji Kohan, the original “Weeds” show aired on Showtime for eight seasons from 2005 to 2012. The entire series follows Mary-Louise Parker’s character Nancy Botwin, a widow who turns to drug dealing to support her family following her husband’s demise. The series garnered widespread praise, with Season 1 being Showtime’s highest-rated show at the time. In 2006, Parker won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy.
Will the Weeds Reboot Ever Come Back?
As a devoted fan who’s always on the lookout for great TV shows, I must confess that the recent cancellation of the “Weeds” reboot left me feeling quite disheartened. However, I choose to hold onto the words of our beloved leading lady, Mary-Louise Parker, who has expressed hope that one day we might see the cast and crew reunite once more. After all, as they say in showbiz, it ain’t over until the final credits roll!
It’s quite astonishing that a show as well-known as “Weeds” has faced such difficulties during its revival, considering its prominent status.
Between 2005 and 2012, this original series stayed highly popular among Showtime’s audience. Although it started losing critical acclaim as the series progressed, it still managed to stay relevant during award season discussions, garnering 14 Emmy nominations and winning one Emmy (for Outstanding Cinematography for a Half-Hour Series in 2010).
In recent times, many popular TV shows from that era have made a comeback, either semi-successfully or successfully, including revivals of series like “How I Met Your Mother” and “The Big Bang Theory”. These shows continue to live on in one way or another.
Nowadays, the TV industry isn’t like it used to be when “Weeds” bid farewell in 2012. The environment that a “Weeds” reboot would enter is far from the same one the show left behind. With budget constraints affecting the business, a sequel for “Weeds” might not have seemed like a wise investment.
At the moment, I find myself eagerly anticipating fresh episodes from the reboot of my beloved series, as for now, all I can do is revisit old favorites through reruns.
