Web3 Gaming Sees Shift as Traditional Games Professionals Outnumber Crypto Specialists

What to know:

  • Over half of those working in Web3 gaming have a background in traditional gaming.
  • Digital asset ownership was named the most valued feature of blockchain gaming.
  • Poor user experience is the industry’s biggest hurdle.

As a seasoned analyst with years of experience in both traditional and blockchain-based industries, I find myself intrigued by the evolving landscape of Web3 gaming. The latest findings from the Blockchain Game Alliance (BGA) suggest that we are witnessing a significant shift, with professionals from traditional gaming outnumbering those from blockchain and cryptocurrency backgrounds.

In contrast to what you might expect, more individuals with a background in conventional gaming are currently employed by Web3 game companies than those specializing in blockchain and cryptocurrency, as indicated by the Blockchain Game Alliance (BGA).

The BGA’s 2024 Industry Report showed that a majority (52.5%) of the respondents possess expertise in gaming, which is the highest proportion since the survey started in 2021. On the other hand, professionals specializing in blockchain and cryptocurrency have dropped to 10.8% from last year’s 21.7%.

The report highlighted a notable trend: More experts are joining this field from the gaming industry rather than blockchain or cryptocurrency, which indicates a growing emphasis on creating games that prioritize fun over financial aspects.

The report underlined the fact that the ability to own digital assets is considered the most significant advantage of blockchain games by a majority (71%) of the 623 survey participants. This preference has been consistent since the BGA’s initial survey in 2021. Additionally, other advantages like innovative player reward systems and income possibilities were recognized, underscoring the potential for blockchain to transform gaming experiences.

Although advancements have been made, there are still obstacles to overcome. In a recent survey, 54% of participants pointed out that poor user experience and difficulties during onboarding as the most significant barriers in the blockchain gaming industry, which is a decrease from 80% in 2023. This suggests an ongoing effort to streamline blockchain gaming and make it more user-friendly.

As a researcher exploring the dynamic landscape of Web3 gaming, I’ve observed how design innovations and functional enhancements have significantly lowered entry barriers. These advancements are paving the way for a more intuitive, inclusive, and inviting ecosystem that extends its welcome to a wider community. This perspective aligns with Sebastien Borget, president of the BGA and co-founder and COO of The Sandbox.

Approximately two out of every three participants voiced concerns about blockchain games being labeled as scams, and this problem seems to be ongoing. Additionally, around 30% of the participants mentioned experiencing criticism that the world of Web3 gaming is overrun with automated programs, often referred to as bots.
