We Played Monster Hunter Wilds, And So Far, It Rules

As a seasoned Monster Hunter veteran, I can confidently say that the preview of Monster Hunter Wilds at Gamescom left me absolutely thrilled! The expansive map and direct connection between the camp site and the game world are sure to offer an unparalleled sense of immersion. The addition of secondary weapons promises to revolutionize combat, making each hunt a unique challenge.

In the upcoming year, we won’t get our hands on Monster Hunter Wilds, the next edition in Capcom’s Monster Hunter series. But recently, TopMob was granted early access during Gamescom, and senior producer Jean-Luc Seipke is giving us a sneak peek of his experience with Monster Hunter Wilds in our video review. And there are plenty of exciting elements for fans to anticipate!

Initially, what fans might observe is that Monster Hunter Wilds boasts a significantly larger area to traverse compared to its predecessors. Interestingly, this time around, the Monster Hunter camp base is directly linked to the map itself. Additionally, a stronger sense of camaraderie arises during four-player cooperative hunts. Lastly, an exciting feature allows players to select secondary weapons, significantly altering the combat dynamics in the game.

In Monster Hunter Wilds, they’re introducing a new combat focus mode, enhancing player control over weapons for greater precision. This mode additionally highlights vulnerable areas on monsters in red, encouraging players to target these weak points for swift monster defeat. This feature also facilitates team coordination by making it clear where teammates should aim their attacks.

Throughout the demonstration, there were frequent thunderstorms that signaled the appearance of lightning-wielding dragons, which Seipke was unable to vanquish. These storms significantly altered the surroundings’ clarity as well. Moreover, the demo abandoned Monster Hunters’ traditional quest system and instead allowed players to choose their hunts in a more organic manner.

During the demo, there were some issues such as a slow frame rate and occasional crashes. Such problems are not unusual for games still in development. We anticipate these glitches to be addressed before the game’s release, and overall, the experience was quite impressive despite minor technical difficulties.

Monster Hunter Wilds will be released on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC in 2025.
