„We needed something to get attention.” Criticized dev of online shooter apologizes for his behavior on Geoff Keighley show

After the debut and the debated yet “imperative” commentary from 1047 Games’ CEO, the player count in Splitgate 2 has more than tripled since its beta testing.

Ian Prolux certainly grabbed the attention of spectators at Summer Game Fest 2025, not just through his words – such as expressing frustration about playing the same Call of Duty every year – but also with a hat bearing the phrase “Revive First-Person Shooters.

Some players endorsed Prolux, but others found themselves uncomfortable due to the American creator’s statement. Additionally, his reference to the MAGA slogan didn’t garner approval from those who saw it as too politically charged.

As a fervent fan, I must confess that despite my initial reservations and efforts to clarify that his actions weren’t meant as a “political overture “, the CEO of 1047 Games felt compelled to issue an apology for his performance at SGF 2025. He openly acknowledged that Splitgate 2 team was in dire need of something to captivate players, and it seemed that such a spectacle was their most effective strategy, even though Prolux was mindful of the potential backlash.

A crowd of players, a bit of criticism

The debates didn’t seem to cause significant harm to the studio, as evidenced by the fact that the number of players for Splitgate 2 tripled during its release compared to the beta tests leading up to June 6th when the full game was launched. That’s according to what the developer shared on X.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that SplitGate surpassed its own activity record on Steam, set prior to its release, not once but twice! The simultaneous user count skyrocketed from 12,166 to an astounding 25,785. To add to the excitement, Prolux reports that the game saw its peak success on consoles. It’s truly a testament to the game’s appeal and the fun we’re having!

Since that time, it’s evident that the player count has significantly dropped, yet it still reaches approximately 20,000 people during peak hours. What could be cause for concern are the “mixed” ratings on Steam (with a 62% positive feedback) and the relatively low score of 4.06 in the PlayStation Store.

While the influence of Prolux on SGF 2025 contributes partially, the criticism leveled at the “political” or “cap” words used by the developer is not the sole issue concerning Splitgate 2. Some players have expressed dissatisfaction with the battle royale mode (which was not the primary focus as one might assume post-Summer Game Fest 2025), and they are also disappointed by the absence of ranked matches at launch.

Despite this, those who embarked on their journey with the second version of Splitgate early on, are fervently wishing that the developers would continue to heed the suggestions from the gaming community and promptly refine the game at a swift pace.
