We Finally Know When The Boy and the Heron Will Poop Onto Streaming

As a devoted anime fan and someone who grew up watching Studio Ghibli films, I couldn’t be happier about the news that “The Boy and the Heron” will soon be available to stream on Max in the United States. Hayao Miyazaki’s latest masterpiece has been a box office success and a critical darling, and it holds a special place in my heart because of its partly autobiographical elements.

Based on my experience as a dedicated film enthusiast who closely follows the latest news and updates in the industry, I can’t help but be excited about “The Boy and the Heron.” I first came across this intriguing title back in March when an initial report broke out about its upcoming release. Since then, I have kept a close eye on its progress, eagerly awaiting any new developments.

Get ready for parakeet droppings as “The Boy and the Heron,” the hugely successful anime movie by Hayao Miyazaki, joins the streaming world on Max in the US starting September 6th. While it might already be accessible through physical media or digital platforms via GKIDS, this Japanese production arrives late to the streaming party among the major award-winning films. This heartfelt work by the renowned director, inspired by his and his family’s personal stories of living through World War II, is partly autobiographical.

As a movie lover who’s always excited about Studio Ghibli’s animated masterpieces, I wasn’t surprised when I heard that “The Boy and the Heron” would be joining HBO Max. Ever since the app first launched in 2020, all the other Ghibli films have found their streaming home there, distributed by indie shop GKIDS. Over the years, they’ve stayed put despite the merger of Warner Bros. Discovery and the subsequent changes to HBO Max, including its rebranding as “Max” and the content purges that followed. Recently, it was announced that this arrangement would continue, with a multiyear extension of the licensing agreement between Warner and GKIDS. So, I can look forward to having easy access to all these enchanting films on HBO Max for the foreseeable future.

As a movie buff outside the US and Japan, I’m excited to share that Netflix will be my go-to platform for streaming “The Boy and the Heron” by Studio Ghibli. The deal between Netflix, GKIDS, Ghibli, and Goodfellas was extended following the film’s successful release, as reported on March 21st. I’ve enjoyed watching Ghibli titles on Netflix since 2020, and the anticipation for this latest addition has been building up.
