A present Sony employee has disclosed the precise total of PlayStation 3 gaming consoles that were manufactured over time.
Originally, a conversation on Twitter revolved around the PS3’s iconic boomerang controller. A Sony developer then shared that they had just passed by this controller in Sony’s Japanese headquarters, and it was situated on the 16th floor, close to a coffee machine.
The employee took a picture of the boomerang controller in the display case, and on the shelf under it, there was a PS3 console marked with the words, “In memory of PS3 last production. Manufactured 88,159,116 pcs. Period: Oct 2006 – June 2016.”

In total, approximately 88 million PlayStation 3 gaming systems were produced during nearly a decade. As of March 2017, the last reported sales figure for the PS3 was roughly 87.4 million units sold.
Previously, Sony’s ex-president, Shawn Layden, disclosed the precise quantity of PlayStation Portable (PSP) devices produced, resembling the design of the PS3 model as depicted in a photograph taken by a Sony employee.
Today, users can still enjoy playing PS3 games using modern equipment through PlayStation Plus, but they do so by streaming them instead of having native backwards compatibility. Many fans have expressed a desire for this kind of native support. There are whispers about emulation on the PS5, yet it remains uncertain if and when this feature will materialize, given the PS3’s distinct hardware architecture.
