Autumn is fast approaching, as evidenced by lengthening trousers, kids displaying their new school bags to friends, and anticipation among enthusiasts regarding who will open the new season of Saturday Night Live. This role is usually a prestigious one, often given to well-known celebrities or cherished members of the SNL family. Given that this year marks the 50th season, a momentous occasion, every decision seems significant. With only a few weeks left until its return on September 28, it’s high time to make predictions and place bets. I can’t say for certain where one might wager on SNL‘s host choices, but there must be a platform somewhere in the quirky corners of the web. Here are our predicted odds
First, a note on the musical guest:
Booking fall tours well ahead of time makes it challenging to predict musical guests on Saturday Night Live (SNL), as acts like Charli XCX, who seem likely to open the season, may already have commitments elsewhere. For instance, she has a show in Boston on the same night. However, imagining her saying “brat” with a Boston accent might soften the disappointment. Chappell Roan, or the Midwest Princess, is another possibility, as she’s scheduled to be in New York on September 28 but performing at All Things Go festival instead. While it’s theoretically possible that her band could travel by helicopters between Queens and their performances, it seems more likely that SNL scheduling conflicts are the reason she moved her Austin City Limits performances from Saturday to Sunday in early October. In truth, any artist who released an album this summer has a fair chance, including Post Malone, Billie Eilish, Gracie Abrams, Camila Cabello, Zach Bryan, Anderson .Paak, Megan Thee Stallion, Eminem, or Jack White. Florence Pugh +1,000
On special occasions, the main host might receive preferential treatment, but sometimes things don’t go as planned, and the show invites someone who is friendly and has something new to promote, even if they haven’t hosted before. A good example of this is Owen Wilson, who made his hosting debut in 2021. At that time, he was promoting season one of Loki, which premiered in early June, as well as The French Dispatch, which came out in theaters shortly after his SNL episode. However, neither event seemed to make a big deal about him hosting. Although it’s unlikely to happen this season due to the anniversary and election, it’s possible that every former cast member and host could have a wedding during the same weekend. Currently, we’re dealing with our intermediate group of SNL hosts – individuals who are part of the extended SNL family and on Lorne Michaels’ watchlist, but not yet his offspring in full. Lady Gaga has hosted SNL once and served as the musical guest five times, making her a strong candidate for dual duties to promote Joker: Folie à Deux, set for release on October 4. However, the heavy time commitment of SNL might make hosting before a superhero movie premiere challenging. Looking at other instances of double duty, Donald Glover hosted and served as the musical guest all in one go, while Childish Gambino did put out an album this summer
Regarding comedians who have previously hosted (at a mid-level), Kevin Hart has served as host three times and will be advertising Peacock’s Fight Night. Zach Galifianakis, on the other hand, has also hosted three times, but his last appearance was all the way back in 2013. However, his part in the upcoming season of Only Murders in the Building has certainly sparked discussions about him again

In a special homage to the show’s rich history, Steve Martin – a beloved figure synonymous with Saturday Night Live, having hosted an impressive 16 times since its debut – will grace the stage once more as we celebrate SNL’s golden anniversary. With Lorne Michaels reminiscing about the good old days, it’s heartwarming to imagine Martin opening this season. Not only does he have the upcoming Only Murders in Mind series to promote, but if his character impersonation of Tim Walz is involved, he might be there anyway! It’d be a delightful twist if Martin tied with Alec Baldwin, who kicked off the 2011 premiere without any promotion needed

In 2018, John Mulaney, who had previously worked as a writer for the show during the early 2000s, took over hosting duties. It was speculated that Lorne Michaels appreciated the nostalgic vibe of this occurrence. Since then, Mulaney has returned to host four more times, and Michaels has welcomed several other stand-ups onto the stage without a film or scripted TV series under their belt, such as Chris Rock hosting the 2020 season opener. It’s plausible that Mulaney might be invited back, given his recent Netflix series “Everybody’s in L.A.” and the opportunity to pay homage to the rich history of stand-ups on the show

In 2019, Adam Sandler hosted and paid tribute to Chris Farley, which left the entire cast and crew emotional. This performance was the episode that SNL submitted for the Emmys that year, and when they won, Michael spoke about how moments like Sandler’s tribute keep the show going. Now, with Sandler releasing a new special featuring an equally heartfelt song about comedy, there’s a strong possibility he could perform it on SNL, bringing tears to Michael’s eyes. This fact alone puts Adam Sandler in contention for hosting duties

It’s no secret that the upcoming season premiere of SNL is set to feature a popular movie star from this past summer as host. Since 2000, eight hosts have graced the stage following successful summer blockbusters: Steve Carell for The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Chris Pratt for Guardians of the Galaxy, Margot Robbie for Suicide Squad, and most recently Miles Teller for Top Gun: Maverick. It looks like Glen Powell might have had a chance to host in 2022, but it was his role in Top Gun: Maverick that truly established him as a household name in summer 2024. Excluding animated films, Twisters became the highest-grossing film of the summer after Deadpool & Wolverine. It’s interesting to note that Ryan Reynolds has reportedly declined hosting duties a second time in order to avoid interacting with Colin Jost, who is married to his ex-wife, Scarlett Johansson. As an added tidbit, Twisters was distributed by Universal Pictures, which is part of the same conglomerate as the network that airs SNL. Furthermore, Powell’s acting skills in the Netflix film Hit Man, which he co-wrote and starred in, demonstrate his aptitude for donning wigs and delivering humorous performances. Michael has been waiting a long time to capitalize on this ultimate NBC synergy, given that SNL hasn’t had an Olympian host the premiere since Michael Phelps in 2008
Among all potential candidates, Simone Biles stands out as the ideal choice for hosting SNL. Her charisma, self-awareness, and boundless energy make her an excellent fit for the role. She excels in performing with enthusiasm under high-pressure situations, and outside of competition, she frequently shares witty remarks on social media or displays the radiant stardom of Glen Powell on TikTok. It seems that this is her moment to shine. Although she was initially slated to host SNL in 2021 following her Olympic breakout at age 19 in 2016, recent events have made that timeline less feasible (perhaps explaining the unexpected selection of Wilson during that year). Despite the challenges she faced last summer, they have only served to heighten her prominence in this year’s Olympics. Instead of Disney World, she is destined for 30 Rock. With odds of -575 favoring her win of all-around gold, this prediction aligns with her likely success as an SNL host as well
