Way of the Sword Is Not Connected To Previous Onimusha Games Or The Netflix Series

In other words, Capcom has officially stated that the storyline of Onimusha: Way of the Sword stands independently from the plotlines in past Onimusha video games and the Onimusha series on Netflix.

Producer Akihito Kadowaki affirmed during an interview at Summer Game Fest Play Days that this game is a fresh, unique universe compared to previous installments. The primary motivation behind creating such a change was to allow both longtime series enthusiasts and newcomers to begin their journey with the story at the same starting point. This ensures that everyone can share in the same initial experience simultaneously.

So far, all the primary Onimusha games have shared a narrative thread since the release of Onimusha: Warlords in 2001, with characters typically battling against Genma demons and forces under the control of a possessed Oda Nobunaga. Interestingly, Capcom took the step to remaster the first two games in the series during the 2020s, which could lead one to assume they were preparing players for the series’ broader narrative and lore before its resumption. However, this assumption would be incorrect, as the only real connection is that players continue to fight against Genma. Kadowaki also confirmed that the development of Way of the Sword was independent from those remastering efforts.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m excited to take on the role of Miyamoto Mushashi, a protagonist reminiscent of the iconic Toshiro Mifune, who boasts an Oni gauntlet bestowing him with extraordinary abilities. If this character and aesthetic seem familiar, it might be because you caught last year’s Onimusha series on Netflix. However, Kadowaki firmly asserts that there’s no connection between the show and the new game, despite both embodying the same actor-inspired character. “There’s absolutely no connection with the Netflix animated series,” Kadowaki clarified unequivocally.

If you’re looking forward to playing Onimusha: Way of the Sword when it releases for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2026, rest assured that you won’t need to be concerned about its past storylines as it starts fresh narratively.
