It wasn’t long ago that online romance stories needed to be published by big publishing houses before becoming movies with famous actors. Now, Wattpad is changing that. The platform is turning its second-most-popular English story, “Chasing Red” by Isabelle Ronin, directly into a film, according to Variety. The producers have cast popular Gen-Z actors Madelaine Petsch (from Riverdale) and Gavin Casalegno (The Summer I Turned Pretty) as the main characters. Mackenzie Munro will direct, with a screenplay by Lauren Schacher, and filming begins in December in Saudi Arabia. The story follows a classic enemies-to-lovers plot: Veronica, a high-achieving student played by Petsch, initially rejects the charming Caleb (Casalegno), only to find herself needing to stay with him while dealing with past trauma – and sparks inevitably fly.
In 2024, Wattpad launched its first self-funded movie, Boot Camp, directed by the same creator as many of their popular stories. The film featured rising stars Drew Ray Tanner and Rachel Boudwin, telling the story of a teen who tries to change her life at a wellness retreat. While Wattpad’s most famous project is the After series, those films were made by another company. Based on a story originally shared on Wattpad by Anna Todd, the After movies earned $168 million in theaters from 2019 to 2023. Now, Wattpad is focusing on creating its own successful projects from within the platform.
