This year celebrates the 30th anniversary of Super Mario 64, originally created to highlight the capabilities of the Nintendo 64 in a single-player experience. Although not designed for multiple players, speedrunners at the recent Awesome Games Done Quick (AGDQ) charity event transformed the game into a collaborative challenge, with 70 players working together to complete a 70-star run.
From the start, it was obvious the Super Mario 64 speedrunners had mastered techniques for collecting stars as quickly as possible. Their skillful play allowed Mario to perform incredible feats, showcasing impressive athleticism. They were so good, they even made the game’s hardest jumps and challenges look simple.
The speed run took just under two hours to complete. With 120 stars in the game, it’s possible to organize an even bigger Super Mario 64 relay at future Awesome Games Done Quick events. This year’s AGDQ also featured a Mario Kart World speedrunner who finished the All ? Panels category in less than 30 minutes.
Recently, dedicated Super Mario 64 fans discovered a seemingly impossible way to earn an extra life and unlocked a door that hadn’t been opened in years. Plus, a creative modder managed to integrate Minecraft into the original Super Mario 64 game, and it even works on actual Nintendo 64 consoles!
