In the year 2007, two actors who had previously won Oscars collaborated on one of the most impressive cinematic remakes, leading an exceptional ensemble cast in “3:10 to Yuma.” This film, which was recognized with two Academy Award nominations, can now be streamed on Paramount+.
Beyond Crowe and Bale, the 2007 movie “3:10 to Yuma” boasts an impressive cast including Logan Lerman (known for “Bullet Train”), Oscar-nominee Peter Fonda, Dallas Roberts, Vinessa Shaw, Gretchen Mol, and Ben Foster. This film was masterfully directed by five-time Oscar nominee James Mangold, who has also co-written and directed films like “Logan” in the past.
The 2007 Film Remakes the 1957 Original
Mangold’s “3:10 to Yuma” (2007) is a reimagining of Delmar Davies’ 1957 film with the same title, and unlike the original, it has a less optimistic conclusion as portrayed by Ben Wade (played by Crowe) and Dan Evans (Bale). The story is an adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s 1953 short story “Three-Ten to Yuma”.
In Mangold’s movie, Bale’s character Dan Evans is a struggling rancher who agrees to escort the infamous and remorseless criminal Ben Wade, portrayed by Crowe, to a train bound for Yuma for his trial. The original film 3:10 to Yuma is considered a classic, as it delves deeper into the story in numerous aspects.
2007’s remake gives every secondary character their moment to shine and makes them integral to the narrative. While it largely adheres to the plot of the initial film, it introduces a unique, sorrowful conclusion that serves as a pathway for the main villain’s redemption.

3:10 to Yuma is Certified Fresh
Released in 2007, the film 3:10 to Yuma had a relatively low box office run, grossing $71 million compared to its production budget of approximately $55 million. However, over time it has gained a dedicated fanbase, and now enjoys positive reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a “Certified Fresh” critic score of 89% and an audience score of 86%.
Mangold Had to Fight to Get the Film Made
Although it has a devoted fanbase today, it’s said that director Mangold encountered difficulties in getting the remake greenlit by the studio initially. The studio reportedly dismissed the idea, claiming it was too simplistic and lacking depth. However, Mangold had argued earlier that such Westerns are often morally ambiguous. “They’re usually gray,” he said, “filled with damaged characters. Consider films like Unforgiven, or The Searchers. In fact, we could list them all,” Mangold added.
3:10 to Yuma is the sole Western film that director Mangold has produced so far. He explained, “Westerns aren’t just about good guys wearing white hats and bad guys wearing black ones. That’s more like Gene Autry and a few others, and movies such as The Lone Ranger – they don’t really fit the Western mold. They’re actually a different kind of highly commercialized Hollywood genre that is scarcely found even in contemporary cinema.
