Fans typically don’t expect freebies, but it appears that Disney is offering one of the top Star Wars series, episode by episode, without any charge – all you need is an account on YouTube. Catching everyone off guard by uploading the first episode last week, one of Disney’s Star Wars channels has now released the second installment today. Based on the channel playlist, new episodes will be available every Friday.
It’s uncertain how many seasons of “Star Wars: Rebels” will become available for free, but potentially all four seasons (consisting of 75 episodes) could appear on YouTube. Since the series shares connections with the live-action show “Ahsoka,” it might be strategic to release “Rebels” on a free streaming platform at this time, or maybe Disney simply feels that since the show initially aired on the Disney Channel and Disney XD, it’s now appropriate for viewers to watch it whenever they choose.
Animated shows may not be perceived identically to live-action series within a franchise, regardless of the increasing number of animated productions targeted at mature viewers. However, they have proven more reliable in terms of quality compared to their live-action counterparts. For instance, the animated series Star Wars: Rebels boasts one of the highest ratings in the entire franchise, earning a 98% Tomatometer score.
What is ‘Star Wars: Rebels’ About?
First aired in 2014, “Star Wars: Rebels” is set 14 years after the occurrences of “Revenge of the Sith“, a time when the Empire is ruthlessly pursuing and eradicating the remaining Jedi. The series blends characters from the live-action films, introduces some new faces, and brings back characters that previously appeared in “Star Wars: The Clone Wars“. To put it simply, the initial description of the show goes like this:
14 years following the downfall of both the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order, leading to the establishment of the Galactic Empire, a diverse band of rebels known as the Spectres join forces aboard their vessel, the Ghost, a light freighter. They embark on secret missions aimed at challenging Imperial forces across Lothal and other planets that are under the Empire’s oppressive rule.
The show, Rebels, is poised not only to achieve great success but also serves as the foundation for numerous characters who will transition from animation to live-action in Ahsoka. Characters like Ezra Bridger, Hera Syndulla, and Sabine Wren are just a few examples of main Rebels characters that would seamlessly adapt to the live-action branch of the franchise. This smooth transition is largely due to the efforts of Dave Filoni, whose work has significantly increased the interconnectivity and crossovers between the live-action and animated shows. As such, there has never been a more opportune moment for fans who have yet to explore the animated side of the franchise to delve into Rebels on its new platform, YouTube.
