As a seasoned movie enthusiast with a soft spot for documentaries that delve deep into societal issues, I can’t help but be captivated by the upcoming project, “Wasteland Chronicles.” The fact that it has been awarded the New Visions Award at Ji.hlava Documentary Film Festival speaks volumes about its potential to make a significant impact.
The film titled “Wasteland Chronicles,” helmed by directors Viera Čákanyová, Barbora Sliepková, and Lucia Kašová, was honored with the New Visions Award at the Ji.hlava Documentary Film Festival. This award recognizes the most promising European project in development.
As a fortunate film enthusiast, I’ve been granted access to exceptional post-production services worth an impressive €20,000! This amazing opportunity includes €15,000 courtesy of UPP and €5,000 from Soundsquare. The full list of winners can be found here for those who are curious.
The initial concept for the movie originated from Lucia, who was once Slovakia’s Minister of Environment. She had pledged to eliminate three hazardous waste sites. We decided to explore this further. Lucia proposed we co-direct the project. This way, we could combine our voices to discuss these matters, with a particular focus on one of these locations,” Sliepková shared with EbMaster after receiving the award.
In my critique, I’d put it this way: “As a movie enthusiast, I appreciate the unique perspectives that each of us brings to the table. To harness this diversity, we’ve chosen an innovative approach – dividing the film into three distinct chapters. Each chapter will boast its own visual and narrative style, offering a fresh take on storytelling.
A collaborative hybrid documentary, currently being filmed, is underway by Anna Mach Rumanová and Martina Netíková through Slovakia’s Filmsomnia and Czech Republic’s Cinémotif Films. The anticipated release date has been scheduled for the spring of 2026.
The “Triangle of Death,” located in eastern Slovakia, is where you’d find the areas most affected by Europe’s largest Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB) contamination. This is due to the presence of three chemical plants there.
Initially, following the Minister’s announcement, we were hopeful for some action, but unfortunately, nothing transpired. This sparked conversations about bureaucracy and that sense of powerlessness, where one feels that no progress will ever be made and that nobody is listening. It seems that it isn’t a top concern for any administration, so indeed, this film can be classified as political. – Rumanová commented.
Sliepková pointed out that while they keep abreast of this case, engage with the mayors and all relevant parties, their primary intention is to create an artistic film. Yet, regardless of whether it’s an investigative piece or a poetic work, their statement holds political significance.
Regardless of its unique backdrop, the narrative they intended to share transcends Slovakian boundaries. The New Visions jury commended their “collective strategy in addressing the topic” as something that feels both motivational and pressing.
The director asserts, “This isn’t merely a ‘regional matter.’ Leaders across global entities, such as the European Union or globally, seem reluctant to accept accountability for these issues.” Rumanová continues, “The state of our environment impacts us universally. In this context, it significantly influences a large water reservoir, one of the largest in Central Europe. During her segment of the film, Viera delves into the concept that mycelium [root-like structure of a fungus] symbolizes our interconnectedness.
The mostly female team brings another point of view to the case, she noted.
The approach is less commanding and more considerate. Initially, the alignment of three female directors and a female producer occurred by chance. As I sought a co-producer, I chose to maintain this balance. It simply feels intuitive or organic.
She aims to guarantee that, even though it tackles heavy themes, “Wasteland Chronicles” will still resonate with its audience.
In everything I create, I picture sharing it with those who are impacted by it. It’s like returning something to them, perhaps screening the film in a town nearby the site. Some may think, ‘Another environmental movie.’ But I am genuinely excited to collaborate on this project and hope it will be captivating for viewers too,” Sliepková expressed.
In her discussion, she plans to cite Andrei Tarkovsky’s 1979 movie, “Stalker,” and the enigmatic location within it known as the Zone.
I truly step into ‘The Zone’ alongside my character, where everything feels distinctively altered – the sounds are unusual, and the scents are noticeably changed.
Each one of us faced unique challenges. Viera encountered obstacles in reaching her destination since it’s privately held, so she came up with a clever solution to bypass it. Lucia stumbled upon something quite unexpected. For my part, what struck me the most was the utter stillness that enveloped that location. Politicians occasionally visit, snapping photos and issuing declarations, but for the past 60 years, nothing has changed there. The means to eliminate this issue are available, yet they come with a hefty price tag.
Still, they are trying their best to keep their heads high.
Rumanová stated, ‘We’re not excessively pessimistic; instead, we search for glimmers of optimism and means to cope with environmental sorrow.’
Folks seem drained and uninterested in discussing the issue further, let alone discussing it publicly or finding a solution. They’re simply too tired for protests. Yet, we aim to rekindle this conversation – that is our goal.
