Okay, so the Wizards apologized for that April Fool’s joke they tried to pull – it really didn’t go over well with fans, and everyone was pretty upset! But get this – it turns out the whole thing was planned, and everyone involved was in on it! It’s a bit of a weird situation, but it seems like they were trying to create a whole experience, and the ‘backfire’ was actually part of the plan.
April 1st is known for pranks, but the Washington Wizards may have gone too far on Wednesday. They blindfolded a fan, had them attempt a half-court shot for a $10,000 prize, and then falsely told the fan they had won, even though they missed.
After learning he’d been tricked, the man who thought he’d won quickly went from excitedly celebrating to being ridiculed by everyone at the Capital One Arena.
Wizards claim April Fool’s joke was entirely staged
Someone handed the fan a large check for ten thousand dollars and asked him to watch his attempt again. That’s when he discovered he hadn’t actually won the contest.
Even though the team mascot playfully teased him and the announcer highlighted the joke, the fan seemed to handle it well. Getting a signed jersey and great seats for next season definitely made things better!
The Washington Wizards played an April Fool’s Day prank on a fan, leading him to believe he’d won $10,000 by seemingly making a half-court shot while blindfolded. 😭

NBA fans reacted negatively to the incident, with many taking to social media to express their disapproval. One fan called it “insane,” while another described it as simply “cruel and not funny.”
After facing criticism, the Wizards released an apology on social media that implied the incident was staged and the fan who appeared to take the photo was part of the plan all along.
Okay, so they’ve apologized for that April Fools’ joke they pulled last night. Apparently, it made a lot of us think they’d actually misled a fan, and they’re saying sorry for that confusion. I’m glad they acknowledged it wasn’t cool!
The performance with our mascot and team members was planned and meant to be a festive celebration.

Everyone involved understood what was happening, but we didn’t quite succeed as planned. Our fans are the most important thing to us, and we’re dedicated to making sure everyone enjoys coming to our games.
Adding to their troubles, the Wizards lost to the Philadelphia 76ers, marking their fourth consecutive defeat. This was their 20th loss in the past 21 games.
